"Negative remarks: 1. No coffee maker in the room and no complementary coffee in the lobby. This combination doesn't make for a good impression. 2. Room was tired looking. Bathroom was poorly designed (lean over the sink and hit your head on a shelf) 3. Lobby decor is more suited to a hospital waiting room than to the lobby of a major NY hotel 4. With the exception of the housekeeping staff (which was very pleasant) the staff members we encountered seemed as though they wished they were somewhere else. Positive Remark: Great location."

"I travel for my work. After reading the reviews, I decided to give Hotel St. James a try. The price was right and the location was optimal for the job. The historic property is quite clean, due to an attentive staff. The rooms themselves left a lot to be desired. The first room I was in was bare bones with wood blinds that covered a window unit A/C. There was no table, mini fridge or microwave. The water in the shower was long to turn hot, fussy to adjust, then didn't stay hot. Lastly, the mattress was one of the worst I have ever slept on. I even asked housekeeping flip it over but it didn't help. The bed frame wasn't attached to anything so whenever you touched it, it moved all over the floor. I am not a fussy traveler, but not getting a good night's sleep is the worst. The second room was only minimally better. I took it over after another guest chose not to stay at all. I needed to extend a day but there was nothing else available. The mattress was minimally better, but the pillows were terrible and worn. That shower was the same, water temperature finicky, and unless the shower head was adjusted properly, water sprayed out of the connection with nothing coming out of the shower. After 10 days, I was truly happy to check out and head home. Too bad, because again, the location was perfect."

"The problem with my stay is there was an $50 upcharge for the internet and gym beyond the cost of the room itself. None of this was disclosed during the booking and was brought up after the attendant was checking where I purchased the room from. Misleading and essentially entrapment due to the "No Refunds" policy which was disclosed in the description of the Hotel."

"The Empire has a stellar location near Columbus Circle and the Lincoln Center for ballet, opera and jazz at the Lincoln Center and the staff id very good and friendly. However it needs a serious infusion of cash to do some very deferred maintenance. The room we were in which was supposedly deluxe had frayed carpets, torn wallpaper and sub par bathroom facilities. I am never a proponent of corporations taking over mom and pop or private businesses but this hotel needs to be saved by a Marriott or Hilton and get a complete overhaul. It's a shame to let a location like this not live to it's full potential."

"I got in Town at 1am they cancelled my reservation and said they gave my room away so I couldn’t rebook. All hotels in the area were booked. A week later I get charged $600 for cancellation. They were the ones that cancelled it. Now it’s impossible to contact them. Total scam."

"Absolutely terrible experience. The AC in our room was completely broken during one of the hottest times in NYC. The room was unbearably hot, and we had no choice but to open the window—only to deal with extremely loud street noise all night. Me and my family couldn’t sleep at all for 3 nights straight. We stayed 4 days / 3 nights, and every single night was miserable. I contacted the front desk multiple times. They kept saying they would send someone to fix it, but no one ever came. Not once. Completely ignored. The staff was unhelpful and honestly felt ignorant. No urgency, no real solution, no room change—nothing. If the AC couldn’t be fixed, they should have told us early so we could contact our third-party booking and move somewhere else. Instead, we trusted them and gave them multiple chances, which turned out to be a huge mistake. They only refunded the service fee (ac) due to the broken AC, but that does NOT make up for 3 nights of no sleep and the overall terrible experience. Not worth the full amount of money paying. Worst stay ever. Would not recommend."

"Our stay was nearly perfect. E enjoyed hanging at the bar at night. And Jeff was great getting us set up with a car home. The rooms are clean but some need a little upkeep. There was one day with fire alarm testing that prevented sleeping in but otherwise fairly quiet for NYC. Be sure to utilize the blackout curtains!"
