Go on a journey through the history of British and European art when you explore the permanent and touring exhibitions of this major gallery.

With an impressive permanent collection and an expertly curated program of touring exhibitions, Graves Art Gallery is Sheffield’s hub of visual arts. The gallery contains eight distinct exhibition rooms that showcase different themes and histories within various artistic forms. Meander through the galleries and enjoy your time for reflection.

The site was inaugurated in 1934 following a donation from local entrepreneur John George Graves. Pick up brochures to explore the exhibitions on a self-guided tour or try the gallery’s innovative iPod touch-screen technology. The handheld devices contain audio guides and a map, as well as background information on exhibitions and individual works of art. Peruse the pieces at one of the permanent displays, such as Gallery IV’s Abstraction and Art Now. It covers the key themes in contemporary works.

See the 400 Years of European Art display in Gallery VI and A Century of Change in Gallery V. Gallery VII’s Reflections showcases the theme of portraits. Learn about art history in Gallery VIII with A Golden Age. It highlights a time in the 17th century when Dutch merchants could afford exquisite works of art for their homes.

Among the permanent highlights are works by J. M. W. Turner, Alfred Sisley and Helen Chadwick.

Attend one of the many events held in the gallery, which include talks and workshops. Consider gifts and souvenirs in the gallery’s shop or relax with refreshments at the café.

The gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday and is free to enter. There is a limited number of iPods, so be sure to book your free device ahead of time.

Find Graves Art Gallery on the upper floor of the Central Library. It is a 10-minute walk from Sheffield Train Station. Nearby attractions include the Peace Gardens, Millennium Gallery, the Sheffield Town Hall and the Crucible Theatre.
