We got through it
I really wish it was a better experience. The rooms were not up to par. We had to switch rooms 2 times because of issues. First room the shower didn’t work. Second room the ac was broken. Third room didn’t even lock properly or have a working bathtub but we decided twice was enough and we would just take our chances. The front desk totally screwed up my reservation and charged me twice. I still have not been refunded but hopefully will in the near future. Otherwise Harold’s wonderful smile kept us smiling as well. We enjoyed the beach and the goombay smashes. Don’t forget your bug spray or you will come home itching your skin off. The noseeums are atrocious.

Based upon previous reviews and the "Certificate of Excellence," we expected an A+ experience when we arrived by personal plane FEB 12-14, 2019. The resort was essentially closed!! There is a dispute among the ownership on how the resort is to be managed: the only restaurant is closed; the gift shop is closed; the main lobby has been closed and replaced by a shack near the marina; there were no activities whatsoever other than the pool and some water toys; no open fitness center; the marina was locked down. On FEB 15 the weather was awful and there was no lunch or dinner available since the TIKI shack was closed which was the only place for limited meals. Our first assigned lodging room reeked of disinfectant much like Lysol that our lungs burned. We were given another room where the bathroom counter had a non-stop army of tiny ants. The only saving feature was the remaining personnel who tried their best. Most staff members were dismissed and some ended up at the Blue Marlin resort where we were compelled to have dinner each night. We are terribly disappointed that OBB did not extend the courtesy of alerting its future guests of the situation. We are appealing to Expedia, our booking agent, for some compensation.

Hotel in disrepair
Unfortunately the hotel is very expensive and very run down. The hotel has no WiFi even though we had picked a more expensive hotel with WiFi so that we could work. In our room the toilet was blocked, the tumble dryer did not work, the coffee machine did not work. When we asked for pots and pans to cook for ourselves they were old and rusted and there were no sharp knives. When we asked for a knife we were informed that there were none. When we enquirer about a massage there was no one availible. Some days things were open and some days they were not. If we did not have a car and Bahamian SIM cards we would have been very stranded. It is a beautiful location but clearly in disrepair and quite a disappointment.

A lovely quiet and relaxing place to spend a few days. We had a room with an ocean view and 30 steps from the warm carribean sea. Hotel staff very friendly and helpful, restaurant has a varied menu and quality of food is good. The Old Bahama Bay Resort is at the far west end of Grand Bahama so if flying into Freeport purchase a few groceries before making the 40 minute drive. Also, be aware of the no-see-um bugs that are prevalent in July and August, as the names suggests you can't see them but they bite and leave you with an itch similar to a mosquito.

Staff nowhere to be found
when we checked into our room we noticed a bad mildew smell and there was only one coffe cup . The room wasn't very clean either.when we went to check out the staff wasn't there in the office. When we asked the staff in the restaurant next door they told us " well the might show up in a half hour or maybe in an hour or two. Because we had to leave early to beat the storms as we were crossing the Gulf Stream we had to leave the keys with the restaurant staff. When we got home we were charged an extra $72.00 on our bill. After many tries we still haven't gotten an answer as to why. We are now in the process of disputing the extra charge with our credit card company. Needless to say, overall not happy with our stay.

The Hotel Staff Deserve a 15 out of 10!
The locals that work at OBB are absolutely awesome! From the beautiful smile of the check-in receptionist to the very helpful guys working the docks, everyone had a fantastic attitude! I felt very welcome; like some old friends were trying to help me. This included my cleaning staff, the bar tender by the pool, and the wait staff at the restaurant. I don't usually do reviews, but these outstanding employees deserve this review! That includes you Carl who I ran into on his evening off. He took time to introduce me to his family, etc., and offered me a drink. Thanks Carl! This review of the staff takes on more meaning if you understand that many of the staff's homes were destroyed in the recent hurricane! Talk about resilient and inspiring people! To management: Please share my kudos with your staff. You are very fortunate to have them and because of them, I will be back instead of going to Bimini. The facility endured a powerful hurricane this past year and is still repairing various areas. Although understandable, the deferred maintenance is my reason for a 3/5 rating for Facilities and a 4/5 overall rating. Once repaired, my rating would be 5/5. That and the "no-see-ums" (bugs that bite around dust and dawn) are my only complaints. To their credit, OBB was spraying some kind of pesticide around dusk. My advise: bring some good bud spray, your favorite fishing gear, and prepare to have a great time!!
I thought I was getting an "oceanview" room. I guess because I had to walk 40 feet in the grass to the beach it wasn't "oceanfront"??
My view every night!

Nice private peaceful resort.
Nice place but state of the art gym is flat out wrong. Old equipment that has rarely seen maintenance it would seem. No tools to adjust the available bikes and they too seem like they see little maintenance. Tub didn't work. Don't get me wrong. Very nice place but seems they could use a maintenance person. Taking care of these type of things would make this the place you should not miss.

We were unfortunate with our stay in a number of important respects. The hotel was a long way from anywhere. \\\\\\\\\there was a power cut in two of the 3 days we were there. Even when we had eklectricty we did not have TV one day and wifi was intermittent to say the least.. The manager was understanding and gave us a substantial credit agauinst the cost of our stay. She triued her best toi make us happy. You definitely need a car if you are staying there - unless you have a boat since there was a very nice marina.
Response from Beth Watson on Apr 16, 2016
We are certainly sorry to hear that the island had power cuts during your stay with us. Thank you for acknowledging that Jackie did her best to make you happy. You are absolutely right that our resort is set apart from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the island. Our goal is to provide a tranquil, but activity-filled vacation experience. We do hope you will return and see what a true Old Bahama Bay holiday can be.

W truly enjoyed our stay. It was very relaxing. The staff in every capacity were friendly and professional. The hotel is a bit far from Freeport so you have to hire a taxi to take you to see Freeport and the other Hotel and Shopping areas. (A half hour ride-but the driver was awesome). Also, where the beaches were beautiful we could not really swim. The food in the restaurant by the beach was delicious!

We were there in low season so it was quiet and very relaxing. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Free use of paddle boards and kayaks was great. Beautiful location only drawback was,the seagrass which starts just several feet from the shoreline. We would return.
Response from Resort Management on Nov 12, 2015
Thank you for your recent visit and kind words about Old Bahama Bay. Just an FYI that the seagrass is an integral part of the local ecosystem acting as the nursery for many marine life species, which is why we do not remove very much of it. We are so pleased to hear that you would return to see us.

So glad we found this place.
On the other side of Grand Bahama Island from the airport but well worth the drive/ride. By crossing the island you are able to get a feel for the place/people/way of life that you wouldn't by staying near the airport. They have their own marina that caters to large boats (you can fuel your boat) complete with an air landing strip and it's own customs. By staying in West End (the name of the nearby settlement) - you feel like you're really getting away and having a proper break/vacation versus staying in a large touristy hotel. I can't say enough good things about the staff at this property and the beautiful facilities. The rooms are lovely with views of the ocean/beach/lush gardens and very clean and well appointed. You wake up in the morning to birds singing and can have breakfast and lunch at the beach. The staff bend over backwards to accommodate guests (from housekeeping to the front desk and everyone in between). The staff/management at the beach restaurant/bar (Tiki Bar and Restaurant) are amazing as well as the head of the events/tours and equipment area. These folks go way above and beyond to create an environment that is relaxing and where you feel at home and taken care of/pampered. They even worked with my fiance to create a surprise custom lobster dinner on the beach for my birthday that was truly magical! They are well traveled but know the island inside and out and will make sure you know the local places to go to fully appreciate the island. Amazing place.

The rooms were nice. The bar on the beach closed at 4:00 pm, I didn't care for that. The breakfast was great. It took a long time to get dinner at the local restaurant, but the food was good. I came by boat and there was a lot of hidden fees that I disputed with hotel. Com and got some of my money back. I will go back next summer

Would gladly recommend this hotel
My husband and I spent 6 nights here in mid-April 2015, and were very pleased with this hotel. The employees were all very pleasant and helpful, our room was large, attractive, and very clean. The pool appeared to be in good condition, and the deck area, beach, and hotel grounds were also maintained nicely. The young lady at the activities desk was very friendly and informative. We had dinner twice at the restaurant, and while the meals were well prepared, the service seemed very slow, even accounting for being on "island time". One evening in particular, the kitchen seemed overwhelmed by the crowd. The wait staff, however, dealt with this well. I was not overly impressed by the menu, but as mentioned, everything we ordered was tasty. The grill at the beach was convenient, and we really enjoyed breakfasts and a couple of lunches there. The girly rum drinks were a generous size and delicious! It was nice having the bikes available, and we enjoyed a good ride one afternoon. We didn't use the kayaks and paddle boards, but lots of people were having fun with them, and it seemed like a good way for families to spend the day. Since this hotel also has a marina, there were lots of boaters there, so this made for an interesting mix of guests.

We picked this resort as we wanted a nice, relaxing, out-of-the way vacation. It was perfect. The beach was beautiful, the water was smooth as glass. We enjoyed snorkeling, kayaking, paddle-boarding, and riding bike around the resort. Harold was a great resource of what to do and the best what to do it. The restaurants were just ok. The best food on the island was found at a little place run by Max and Rosalina called Native Outback Takeout, however, unfortunately the only way to get there is by taxi or renting a car.

It Doesn't Get Any Better
It's about a 45 minute drive from the airport to this resort located on the northwestern tip of the island & you will pass through some poor neighborhoods getting there. But once past the front gate, everything changes. This place is beautiful & very well maintained. The setting is perfect with the rooms being arranged 6 each in 7 or 8 two-level buildings. There is nothing but well maintained grass & gardens between you & the white sand beach. The resort provides surfboards, snorkel gear & even a Hoby Cat for your use in the ocean. The waters are shallow, clear & beautiful. Every room has a wide, delightful arched Anderson window unit with double french doors facing the ocean. The kitchenette is perfect & the bathroom are comparable to high end Las Vegas hotels. Don't let the price fool you. These are top class suites.

Gorgeous location, really disappointing eating.
Great location, pristine beach (except for the no see ums, but worth the hassle of applying bug spray), gorgeous views, lovely and impressive room (Jr. Oceanfront Suite). However, anyone looking to indulge in dining options will be disappointed...they don't exist. You'll eat, but you'll be bored by the menu in two days (or one, if you're a foodie), frustrated by the really uncoordinated, almost untrained feel of the wait staff, and marveling at the lack of supplies (no steak, menu in the room not the same as in the restaurant, out of things). I don't know if it's a cultural difference, but most were very uninterested (appearing) in making the stay extraordinary. Very few instances of anyone engaging with us during any interactions. Mostly just "here you go" when being served or inquiring about amenities, usually without a smile. Not rude, however, just very standoffish feel. The food end of this place JUST DOES NOT match the beautiful, upscale feel of the rest of it and as you're essentially trapped at the outer end of the island with a very long drive to eat elsewhere, I'm really surprised they haven't responded to the many reviews about improving the dining because if they had a dining experience that even came close to the room and the area, this place would be UNBEATABLE, INCREDIBLE, AND EXTRAORDINARY instead of just good. I wouldn't hesitate to stay again if the dining was good...but an expensive vacation just isn't the right time to have daily disappointment. :(

Unwind and relax in a beautiful secluded place
Old Bahama Bay is a beautiful hotel right on the beach at the far west end of Grand Bahama. The staff is very friendly, the accommodations are very nice, and the beach and ocean are pristine. This is the place you want to go if you need solitude and quiet. Want to decompress and get your soul back from the craziness of your job? This is where you should go. If you're looking for lots of good restaurant choices, shopping, action, and things to do, then you may want to stay closer to Freeport and Port Lucaya. At OBB, you're about a 40 minute drive from the airport. If you want to discover the island at all, I'd recommend renting a car (beware, drive on the left!). Taxi's are too expensive and top food choices are back near Freeport. The hotel usually has a nice restaurant and a small pub/tiki restaurant on the beach. During our stay, the main restaurant was closed, so unless you want fried pub food, you'll need to head to Freeport. Everything is expensive here, so stop at Solomons (supermarket) a few blocks from the airport on your way to OBB. The rooms are comfortable and could use a bit of TLC, but still very nice. The area (West End) is a poorer part of the island hit hard by hurricanes, and can be a bit uncomfortable to be in - although we found the people to be quite nice. All in all, a perfect way to unwind and let your cares float away. Let the staff there take care of you, bring some good books, let yourself relax in this beautiful hotel and beach.

The hotel was great. Beautiful rooms with a gorgeous view from everyone bungalow. Big balconies to sit on and sip coffee in the morning. The downside was that the hotel was a 35 minute ride or a $50-$75 cab to any entertainment. The area around the hotel is not one that you would walk in after dark. If you want to sit and relax within the resort I would definitely recommend it.

This hotel was amazing ! The rooms were in little bungalows throughout property. They were the size of 1 bedroom apartments. Beautifully decorated. The grounds were beautiful. Free bikes and kayaks to explore. The negative was that once you leave the property you have a 35 minute drive or a $75 cab ride to get to any entertainment. There are 2 restaurants on property but close very early.

Another amazing vacation at Old Bahama Bay!
This was our second stay and we're already looking forward to returning again! Beautiful, spotless accommodations, quiet and relaxing, friendly and very helpful. If you're looking for lots of action and nightlife then this is not the place for you but when you need to relax, this is paradise. The swimming pool is second to none and the beach is lovely. Activity center provides fishing poles, paddle boards, kayaks, hobie cat at no charge and can also arrange excursions outside of the resort. You can also rent bicycles if you want to bike around West End. The food and beverages at Teasers as well as Dockside Grill are delicious! Don't miss the Coconut French Toast, Bahama Mamas, or Cracked Conch. Everything is tasty and the service is fabulous. Ask Mary at Teasers to make you a Mudslide you won't soon forget :) The front desk was very helpful with arranging transportation to and from the airport and also allowed us a late checkout. This is a remote, out of the way beach resort. Long drive into Freeport but all the people were friendly and helpful. We were not impressed with the food and ate out when we could. Take care with a rental car! Most are old and worn and left hand drive--we had two cars, the first had several issues the second was well worn but sufficed.

Beautiful Hotel near beach
We stayed four days in this cute hotel with 2 kids. We booked a room with pool view but we get a room with see view complementary :) We didn't ask for it they just provided it. Maybe because there were not much guests and they could manage it but anyway it was a very nice gesture....thank you. The room had a nice furnishing, it was always clean, big bathroom, enough space in the living room....everything was great! It has a long and beautiful sandy beach with enough sun bed you can use the beach equipment ( kaiak, snorkelling, bicycle, etc.) complementary. We had only one problem that there is no shop or store near where you can by anything. There is ruined settlement about 10 min away (with bicycle) where you can find a "store" (a 20m2 room, slums style) with very basic goods. The restaurant is a bit expensive and it has not a big selection.
