Lovely hotel with super staff who were always ready to help. Room was large with a good sized balcony and cleanliness was excellent. The breakfast available was one of the best we have had with a huge choice and staff making the process smooth and tidy. The bar area was great too - plenty of room both inside and out - with pizzas available all day. Very good value for money.

The room was great and the staff we dealt with were mostly friendly. The check-in was not great, insufficient people on the desks and the room was not ready until 3pm. Which negatively affected our plans significantly.
The cost of breakfast is nothing short of daylight robbery. You can get a very hearty breakfast at various well known restaurants across the road in the shopping centre for less than a third of the cost charged by the hotel, so you have to wonder why anyone would eat at the hotel.
The location can be a bit noisy at night given the proximity to the Gateway Shopping Centre, but generally it quietens down after about midnight.
The rooftop pool is quite small and really only good for a minor dip to cool off.
I probably would stay at this hotel again, but I definitely would not be eating breakfast here.
The hotel is centrally located between South Beach and North Beach. Directly across the promenade and beach. Close to many restaurants and 25 minutes’ walk to the Soccer and Rugby Stadium in North beach side. Great location for those walkers and there are places to rent bikes on the promenade.
This Protea Hotel, and there are several, is convenient to the beach an Durban's many restaurants. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. Plenty of room to work. Usually a fridge and micro wave if you can't resist taking home your restaurant goodies. Not a hotel to hang out in. You can get a drink and watch a little soccer in the small bar. That's about it. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.
