Aux portes de l'ancienne province de la Marche*, la forteresse est située sur un éperon granitique surplombant le confluent de la Creuse et de la Sédelle. Le nom même de Crozant, forme dérivée de "Crozenc", serait d'origine franque (suffixe germanique "enc")*. Les premières traces écrites sur Crozant remontent au début du XIème siècle. D'après les chroniques de Geoffroy de Vigeois, Gérald (ou Géraud ou Gérard), comte de Crozant et vicomte de Bridiers, vend la Villa Sosterranea (La Souterraine dans la Creuse) à l'Abbaye Saint-Martial de Limoges. Par contre, le château n'est cité, dans les mêmes Chroniques, que vers le milieu du XIIe siècle (1140). (généalogie par Cedric de Crozant de Bridiers). La construction la plus ancienne serait la base du donjon carré qui pourrait remonter au XIIe siècle. En 1177, le comté de la Marche, dont Crozant fait partie, est cédé au duc-roi Henri II Plantagenêt. Le château prit son aspect définitif au XIIIème siècle, alors que Crozant appartenait à Hugues X de Lusignan*. C'est à cette époque, sous l'influence de sa femme, Isabelle d'Angoulême, veuve de Jean Sans Terre, mère de Henri III d'Angleterre, que les constructions les plus importantes sont réalisées (Tour d'Isabelle / 1217-1245, Tour du Renard, Tour Colin). Après les Lusignans, se succéderont comme Comtes de la Marche et propriétaires de Crozant, des Bourbons, des Armagnacs, puis de nouveau des Bourbons. Le 22 aoùt 1356, le château de Crozant résiste aux assauts des anglo-gascons du Prince Noir* qui mettront le village à sac. Au XVe siècle, suite aux dégâts de la guerre de Cent Ans, Charles VII fit restaurer le château, le rendant habitable. Le Donjon est aménagé avec fenêtres à coussièges* et cheminées,sur 3 étages. Le châteu perd alors son caractère défensif. Pendant les guerres de religion, le château passera de mains catholiques à protestantes, puis de nouveau catholiquues. "Une reconstruction de la courtine et une réfection des parements de la tour pourraient avoir été réalisées à l’issue d’un tremblement de terre en 1606. Cet événement, s’il n’a pas ruiné immédiatement la tour, l’a largement fragilisée. a complété sa destruction. Les Wisigoths, installés entre Dniepr et Danube, sont contraint de fuir vers l'Ouest, poussés par l'avancée des Huns. Après s'être installés dans les Balkans, il mettent Rome à sac en 410. Vers 480, le royaume wisigothique à son apogée s'étendra de la Loire à Gibraltar et de l'Atlantique aux Alpes. Le déclin des Wisigoths arianisés commencera en 507 avec la défaite de Vouillé, face aux francs de Clovis, roi chrétien. Les dernière possessions, nord du Portugal et Galice, seront conquises par les musulmans en 711. Le suffixe "enc" serait d'origine germanique, il indiquerait l'origine. Le toponyme de l'ancienne province de la Marche ne dérive t-il pas, lui aussi, du germanique "marka" ( limite, frontière). Mais on remarquera que le suffixe "enc" est également très présent en occitan pourtant faiblement germanisé. Le suffixe "enc" rappelle également les Ligures. En 1200, la fiancée de son père Hugues IX de Lusignan, Isabelle Taillefer, héritière du comté d'Angoulême est enlevée par le roi d'Angleterre Jean sans Terre. Cette enlèvement n'a rien de "romantique", il s'agit juste d'empêcher l'alliance du roi de France avec le puissant comte de Lusignan. Depuis ce scandale, les Lusignan sont dans le camp capétien et hostiles aux intérêts Plantagenêt. Philippe Auguste, profitera de ce "fait divers" pour déclencher « la commise » des terres de Jean. C'est le début du démentellement de l'empire Plantagenêt sur le continent. Isabelle deviendra reine "consort" d'Angleterre. A la mort de Jean sans Terre en octobre 2016, son fils aîné deviendra roi d'Angleterre ( Henri III). En 1220, Isabelle épouse Hugues X de Lusignan, comte de la Marche, le fils de son ancien fiancé. C'est probablement Isabelle qui amène Hugues de Lusignan à organiser un front commun avec son fils Henri III d'Angleterre, contre le roi de France Louis IX.
