It's small enough to perhaps be called "cute" but you won't catch me using this term. Monteriggioni began as a border fortress built on a round hill by Sienna against the Florentines. It is famous for the intact defensive structure that held up against repeated Florentine attacks in the 11th century; its 10 meter high walls and 14 towers can still be seen for miles around. Monteriggioni has been featured in movies as a typical medieval village. The village is slightly elliptical in shape with two gates (a third has been plugged). The major gate tourists will use when coming from the parking lot, Porta Franca, owes its name to the Via Francigena--Monteriggione was a major stop on the pilgrimage trail from Cantebury to Rome. So many places we visited were overly crowded & this location was perfectly situated in Tuscany between Siena, San Gimignano, and other destinations while providing a refuge from the crowds. Castellina in Chianti is small, but it has several great restaurants to choose from that are within walking distance of the hotel. Breakfast was absolutely lovely. Lots of options, with something for everyone. We loved the historic nature of this property, and the staff has done a wonderful job of modernization while protecting its historical integrity. Clean rooms and comfortable bed. Sadly our aircon was broken so had to sleep with the windows wide open all night. Was an easy location to find coming off the Autostrada to Siena. Idyllic setting with beautiful buildings and easy parking. Checking in was a breeze due to the staff and before I knew it I was set up in my room. Unlike anything I’ve stayed in before but never the less simply wonderful. Room and bathroom clean and wellcoming. Good AC if you need but you can open up the windows when there’s a nice breeeze blowing, Pool and area were perfect, laid out nicely with a privacy feel to it and a great sun spot. And my absolutely favourite part was the breakfasts and sitting area. Simply brilliant. I am a solo traveller and needed help with tours and suggestions and before I even asked, they were providing me with information, setting me up with wine tastings and making dinner reservations for me.
