Friendly, helpful staff, especially when answering my questions via email. I'm a local, but was staying there with an out of state friend, and I'm a little clueless about the city.
So I appreciated the great location just around the corner from the fantastic Lygon Street. Easy access to trams as well.
And the most comfortable beds we have ever slept in!
Close to University of Melbourne campuses, as well as to public transport and to shopping and many many great local restaurants.
I would especially recommend the hotel bar and restaurant. The bar is comfortable and provides great service -- the wines we were served were excellent, without being expensive. The staff was very serviceable. Of special mention is the restaurant and its wonderful food. The steaks are truly to die for, as are the battered french fries (which are standard).
All in all, a very nice experience!
A beautiful and interesting hotel, the Larwill boasted excellent prints and originals. The bedroom for self and wife was clean with a very comfortable King-size bed. The facilities were excellent, though the hotel has no café or anything than $15 (nice) meals on request. The coffee in the foyer, shared with the Childrens Hospital, was excellent and the service always professional, courteous and useful. This hotel is strongly recommended except for the need to either use the trams, hire a little AlphaSmart or use taxis. As we are great fans of the Melbourne tram system, the location was no problem. Even though it is on a main road, it was incredibly quiet and cosy in the room, on the first floor, with a view over the reserve. Tremendous!
My parents loved their stay at the Alston, I've just booked another in fact. It's close, has everything they need and the beds are apparently amazing. The rooms are always clean and my encounters with staff have been really lovely, above and beyond.
An inner-city suburb, Carlton is known as Melbourne's 'Little Italy.' Lygon Street is the hub of Italian tradition, lined with a plethora of cafés, European cake shops, gelaterias, trattorias, and fine Italian restaurants. The area is also home to well-preserved examples of Victorian architecture and the World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens.
