Cool da Heels Aloha travlers! I'm very happy to see that you made it through these last couple of months, it certianly has been one for the history books! If you are feeling the urge to venture out, Hotel Pa'amalu may be the very place for you. We are now accepting reservations from safety minded travelers. Our cottage is located on a three acre mango farm and your closest neighbor is located twice as far as your best mango toss on a good day! Hotel Pa'amalu is the only one room hotel in Kealakekua Hawaii. Hotel Pa'amalu is a blend of Polynesia, Indonesia and amnesia. Come swim in our warm tropical waters or explore the enchanting tropical rain forests atop Kilauea, possibly the most active volcano on the plantet. Plan your day while lounging on the lanai, comforted by the warm gentle trade wind breezes. You can begin your day 5 minutes from historical Kealakekua Bay, on the leeward slopes of Mauna Loa on the island of Hawaii. The weather is warm, sunny and mild all year long...yes all year long. Hotel Pa'amalu is not really a hotel, I just thought that was a catchy name. My dad, friends and I built this little house a few years back. I would, however, describe it as a small story book cottage, welcoming you to write your own chapter. We are settled just up slope from an old Hawaiian fishing village known as Keei. We are surrounded by many different varieties of mangos, bananas and other horticultural surprises including our native geckos. If you don’t mind geckos this place is for you. Beautiful views of the ocean; you can walk to down Napo’opo’o Road to the water (about 3/4 mi - the road has no shoulder, but it is doable); and array of vegetation on site including mango trees, orchids, palm trees, etc - we had the best oranges picked right off the tree. The building itself is very open with a screened-in lanai, where you can watch the sun set, and a fountain just outside that attracts all sorts of birds. It has an islandy vibe overall, but if you don’t like sharing space with geckos, this is not the place for you. The bed is pretty firm, fyi. Kai is a great, laid-back host. This was our second time staying at Cool Da Heels and was just as lovely as our previous stay. Immaculate, cozy, tastefully decorated and peaceful, it provided an ideal home base location to explore the southern part of Hawaii Island as well as Volcanoes National Park. It's only 30 minutes to the restaurants and shops of Kona and the beautiful southern beaches of the Kohala coast. While the bathroom is remodeled with an open shower, the kitchen is a bit dated, but fully functional and well appointed. There's no AC but the trade winds and a ceiling fan are sufficient. Absolutely loved the area, the beauty, tranquility and setting. The place is definitely cool with unlimited potential. The interior needs a bit of tightening up. A few things need to be replaced or worked on, screws tightened, kitchen floorboards replaced, sealant applied, etc…. I think it would’ve been helpful to get a better idea beforehand of a few things. I would have liked to know what was jumping on the roof and scratching around outside. Made it a bit difficult to sleep initially. The host is super nice and accommodating. The cottage is cozy, comfortable and secluded; the lanai is the perfect place to sip coffee while listening to the birds and watching the ocean in the distance. Charles is a wonderful host -- he made special efforts to make the place perfect for us, and was always a phone call away when we needed something. And the location is wonderful: 2 minutes from quiet, beautiful Manini Beach; 5 minutes away from Honunaunau Bay (Two Step), which is the best snorkeling spot in the entire state (and free!); minutes away from Captain Cook (with the Coffee Shack and a number of good restaurants and AMAZING views); and 15 minutes outside of Kailua-Kona. The spot is remote, allowing for a peaceful time to listen to birdsong and look out to the ocean view. The home itself is beautifully designed, as the open air flow from the ocean breeze was enough to keep us cool.,I cannot get over how this place was perfect for a relaxing getaway that’s off the beaten path. If you don’t mind the occasional gecko and you’re looking for a sign as to where to stay on the Big Island, this is it. ##### Madi M.
