BALANCED REVIEW FROM REPEAT CANCUN VISITOR: We have travelled from the US to Cancun many times and have stayed at several properties throughout the 'hotel zone' over the course of 15 years. We have stayed at Hyatt Ziva, Oleo, RIU Palace Peninsula, etc. This recent visit at Ocean Dreams Cancun was our first experience with a non 'all inclusive' property. PROS: Staff is super friendly, beach location/view is awesome, pools are clean and not over-crowded, plenty of beach chairs/umbrellas, easy walk to center of restaurants/bars/market (this can be a pro/con depending upon what you like), had no issues with noise, absolutely no bugs(saw a review mentioning 'bugs'-sounds made up to me), super friendly guests, awesome on-site surfing instructor (Good Vibes Surfing), common areas in hotel were very clean, on site tour agent was so helpful and kind, very secure/safe, fun vignettes/swings/seating area, walk from room to beach is super close, everyone was so nice! CONS (nothing major): No coffee maker in room, rooms do need an update, towels are worn, hot water good/pressure is not great, don't plan on an early check-in/late check-out, portions of beach facing exterior needs some update, Ocean Dream website room photos are better than actual rooms, room soap/shampoo is super basic, showers need serious update, elevators require patience. OVERALL: Staff/service is great. View/location is great. Good option if you want 'basic on a budget'. Just needs updated rooms.

The hotel rooms are good and they are kept clean . My only complaint is that the elevators do not work properly and they don’t have anything on the outside of the elevators to inform you that they only want 3 people inside . There’s a sign inside the elevators but nothing in the outside before you get on . The hotel has 8 floors and the screen at times will read from 10 up to 18 . The doors stall to close or open at times . We got on our first day the elevator on the 2nd time we used it, it just stopped between 2 floors so the cleaning people asked us to help open the doors so we could get out . We open the inside door and we helped them open the outside door so we could get out . The outside door came out the hinges so the next day they came to me about a possible charge I told them it’s not my fault that elevator wasn’t working right and that the cleaning people told us and helped us to open the doors to get out . So they went through the cameras and split the charges between me and the housekeepers which was not my intention. Just didn’t think it was right to get charged for something that was already not working right . They “fixed “ it the next day and they still weren’t working properly. I know by the way they work I’m not the only one that has had to pay for that . It’s easy to get in 4-5-6 people without knowing they only want 3 inside . I’ll never stay there again just for the fact it seems like something they half ass fix to scam you a charge .

When we first arrived we were told we could not sit at any of the tables around the pool unless we paid for a drink, when we’re were allowed to go to our JR suite with hot tub, we learned the hot tub didn’t work. The 2nd day our water completely stopped running. No showering, no brushing our teeth. I went to the office and complained and he spoke perfect English and said it would be fixed shortly. 5 hours late the AC stopped working in our room. I went downstairs again to speak with the front desk, now the guy doesn’t speak English and kicked us out. We weren’t a group of wild kids. We are a mature group of 40 somethings who only expected a working hot tub which we paid a premium for, running water and AC. I would never ever stay there again. They were so rude, we were left on the street with out luggage and had to scramble to find a new place to stay. Horrible experience.

Avoid, they will steal from you. We were charged $80 USD for 4 really crappy towels that they claimed were missing. In reality these towels were just 25 feet from our room by the pool but they insisted that they were missing. They know very well that hotel staff picks up towels by the pool, puts them in the laundry, and then restocks the rooms. They know they are not really missing towels. This is just a scam they run to charge people more money. As I was arguing with the front desk schmuck about this, I told him 5 times to just charge my card or I was walking out. Each time I said it I backed away another step, finally just turning and leaving. When our shuttle got to the gate, they wouldn't let us leave. They made us go back up to the front desk and then pay the $80. Food - expensive and terrible from the on-site restaurant. I had the steak which they called a New York. I'm tempted to grill up a New York at home and send them a picture. They clearly have never seen a real one. Others in our group had the fish. Undercooked and slathered with so much garlic that no one could eat the whole thing. Do yourself a solid and stay away from this place.

This property does not compare to their pictures. The place is dirty and falling apart. We had a room with a broken window and door. The room is so dirty and rusty and the staff is extremely rude! I would not recommend, sure it’s “affordable” but extremely disappointing.

I left my room keys in the room and asked them for a new one. They charged me $20 DOLLARS for a new one and said at least twice, that I would get a refund once I showed them the ones I had left in the room. During check out I asked for a refund and the front desk said they don’t give refunds. Basically I was lied to in the face. Beware of those old elevators, it’s definitely a safety hazard. Just taking the stairs to the second floor was horrible, I cannot imagine going up further.

The location was ideal, especially if you like the nightlife Cacun has to offer. The property itself was subpar....elevators were not working and the one that was, was suspect at best, door would not close, you had to do something special to get it to close
