Oakside Gate House
When we were planning our Alberta/BC trip, I was captivated by the beautiful Oakside Gate House photos. With my husband having mobility difficulties, the very short distance to the famous Heritage Park was ideal for him to use his wheelchair freely and enjoy what the park had to offer. It was also a wonderful location to spend time with my son and his family who live in Alberta and joined us at Oakside Gate House. Near the end of our trip we had run into trouble with our train schedule (Vancouver to Jasper) but a quick phone call to Marty and within minutes, we were able to fly there a day early. The house is even more beautiful than the photos. It is a show home with all the art and the modern layout of the rooms. The kitchen became our favourite meeting place for chats and snacks with the island and high stools, although we made full use of the other rooms. It is very clean and the extra touches such as books placed in the rooms were appreciated. Marty and his wife live downstairs and were very sensitive to our privacy. We really enjoyed their company so often invited them to join us as they were fun to be around. Marty has a wealth of information regarding the art world and other interesting topics. A warning here - challenging him to a chess game may be your undoing. :-) They allowed us to use their washer and dryer downstairs during daytime hours. Overall, of all the places we stayed during our trip out west, the Oakside Gate House was our most enjoyable. It was a perfect place to end our trip and we would go back there with pleasure.
