Spacious 2 bedroom and 2 bath millhouse on large corner lot. 1/2 mile from downtown St. Marys waterfront. Beautifully landscaped with deck and fire pit for those cool summer nights. Freshly painted with one king bed, one full bed, full size sofa sleeper and one futon. Also offers office space with a full size futon for extra guests. This house will accommodate up to 6 people comfortably. Pet friendly with a non-refundable deposit applied. Great for a weekend getaway or long term visits. You won't be disappointed.

  • Dungeness on Cumberland Island, Georgia, is a ruined mansion that is part of a historic district that was the home of several families significant in American history. James Oglethorpe first built on Cumberland Island in 1736, building a hunting lodge that he named Dungeness. Oglethorpe named the place after Dungeness, in England. The next Dungeness was the legacy of Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene, who had acquired 11,000 acres of island land in exchange for a bad debt. His widow built a four-story tabby mansion in 1803, over a Timucuan shell mound. During the War of 1812 the island was occupied by the British, who used the house as a headquarters. In 1818 Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee, a dashing cavalry commander during the Revolutionary War and father of Robert E. Lee, stayed at the house until his death on March 25, 1818, cared for by Greene's daughter Louisa, and was laid to rest in nearby cemetery with full military honors provided by an American fleet stationed at St. Marys, Georgia. The house was abandoned during the U.S. Civil War and burned in 1866. In the 1880s the property was purchased by Thomas M. Carnegie, brother of Andrew Carnegie, who began to build a new mansion on the site. The 59-room Queen Anne style mansion and grounds were completed after Carnegie's death in 1886. His wife Lucy continued to live at Dungeness and built other estates for her children, including Greyfield for Margaret Carnegie, Plum Orchard for George Lauder Carnegie, and Stafford Plantation. By this time, the Carnegies owned 90% of the island. The Carnegies moved out of Dungeness in 1925. In 1959 the Dungeness mansion was destroyed by fire, alleged to be arson. The ruins are today preserved by the National Park Service as part of Cumberland Island National Seashore. They were acquired by the Park Service in 1972.

14-night stay. Let me.tell tou these hosts have thought of everything from extra laundry soap to charcoal, firepit wood. We stayed at the coldest time and unfortunately the heating system kept freaking out on below freezin nights, but we just built a beautiful fire out on the huge gravel patio in the mornings to warm up. That view has the early morning sun, all day sun, and late afternoon bit of sunset. The house was cozy and not stiff, felt okay to live in it. Extra towels and linens everywhere. ST.MARYS aline is crazy wonderful. Our favorite VRBO yet and we are annual platinum members.!! Get this one.

Welcomed our pet, loved the orange trees and big bedrooms with 2 bathrooms. Very quiet and close to everything. Comfy beds, plenty of firewood for pit outside.Only wish there could have been TV in bedrooms. But overall, we were very pleased!!

This house ruled. Check in and out was easy and Robert was helpful and responsive. There was plenty of space for 4 adults and 3 kids. The beds were comfortable, and it had everything we needed. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Some disappointments

Overall, the experience was fine for the price. The house itself is cute, cozy and clean. Neighborhood seemed safe and very close to downtown St. Mary's waterfront and we very much enjoyed the 4th of July Festival that they had. Loved the jetted tub, the outside swing for morning coffee and the fire pit for s'mores, also the board games. First day of check-in I thought the A/C was out, it was reading 78 on the thermostat around 4pm, but was set to 74. So we were pretty hot after hauling all of our things in. As the sun would go down, the house would cool down some but we did have to borrow some fans from a friend who lives in town to help keep us cool because I think the A/C just couldn't keep up with the Georgia heat. It would start climbing around 73 inside about 11am and got up to 82 inside at one point. I let Mark know the same day we arrived, on the 3rd, he put a call in but never heard back, the next day was a Holiday and then the weekend so I guess they just were tied up. We just had to make sure we left the house during the peak hours of the day, and kept the fans running. We also couldn't connect to the Wi-Fi, we tried with multiple devices. We spoke with the internet provider, they tried to troubleshoot from their end, with no luck. Luckily we all had cell phones except my 5 year old, and we just turned on our mobile hotspot so he could have some things to watch on his tablet when it was time to wind down for the night, but we never could get the TV to connect.

Our stay was very comfortable. The house was just perfect for my mom and 2 sisters. We were visiting family so it was convenient also. If I had 1 complaint o. Our lasy day before leaving the internet didn't work and we could not watch tv. That was minor so overall it was great!

St Mary Hideout

This is a well maintain home. Space lay out fit our 4 perfect. Fully equipped with dishes and pots and pans. Would have loved a bottle of oil for cooking. Two bathrooms in a small home is wonderful. The neighborhood is awesome and quiet. Great location to all the activities the area offers.

Nice place poor management

This house is a nice place. But when I arrived I noticed the Air Conditioner not working properly it was 78 degrees inside the home. I messaged the host and got response that night. So I had to go and a fan from Walmart. So I reached out the next day to ask to them to please have someone to look at it please. And. The only response I got was that they were there the day before I arrived and it was working and then nothing for the rest of my stay. It would cool it down to about 72 around 3 in the morning . So I wouldn’t recommend this place or anywhere this host has to offer.

This property was the perfect house for our little getaway to St. Mary’s. Clean, plenty of space and just adorable. Great location and convenient distance to so many things. If we’re ever back this way, again, we will definitely check the availability for this place.

Nice stay!

Cute place with everything you need for an extended stay! Nicely decorated, quiet neighborhood and close to downtown. A bonus, if you are traveling with a dog there is a nice dog dog park just a block away.
