Früher befand sich hier der Friedhof. Die Statue wird durch eine kunstvoll geschwungene Überdachung und eine Rückwand geschützt. Die etwa vier Meter hohe Marienstatue wurde 1727 geschaffen und in der Fassadenmitte zwischen den Münstertürmen aufgestellt. Sie hat den Brand des Münsters im Jahr 1751 überstanden. Starke Verwitterung hatte den Sandstein dieser Statue so stark geschädigt, dass sie durch eine Kopie ersetzt werden musste. Am jetzigen Standort steht die Madonna von 1727 seit dem Jahr 1913. Durch mehrere fachgerechte Restaurierungen ist nicht mehr erkennbar, dass es sich hier um die Original-Statue handelt. Kunstgeschichtlich wird dieser Madonnentypus als "Immaculata" (Der unbefleckten Empfängnis) bezeichnet. Das Haupt Marias ist von zwölf Sternen umkränzt, die Schlange als Symbol der Sünde, die sich um die Weltkugel windet, wird von Maria zertreten. Die Zahl zwölf steht für: die zwölf Stämme Israels, die zwölf Apostel, die zwölf Tierkreiszeichen, die zwölf Monate – symbolhaft für Vollkommenheit und Vollständigkeit. Da die Europafahne am 8. Dezember 1955, einem Marienfeiertag, vom Ministerrat in der bestehenden Form bestimmt wurde, wird sie in Verbindung mit Maria gebracht. Besonders die blaue Farbe und auch die zwölf Sterne sind ein symbolhafter Hinweis. Die zwölf goldenen Sterne auf blauem Hintergrund versinnbildlichen sämtliche europäischen Nationen, eben als Symbol der Vollständigkeit. Die Marienstatue hat der aus Bayern stammende Bildhauer Michael Speer im Jahr 1727 geschaffen.
