Deep in the Mississagi River Valley, this unassuming timber-frame cottage is hidden among trees on a northern camp that gently slopes towards the shores of a pristine lake. An imposing cliff that rises towards the sky from the rugged Canadian Shield - a nesting haven for falcons - shelters the lake from the East. The cliff inspires awe with its ever-changing colours under the sunrays reflecting off the rocks. The cottage itself was hand-crafted by a master timber-frame builder to provide a homey interior space, with the exterior causing minimal disruption to the surrounding nature. The space is suitable for families with children or couples that are searching to get away from their busy lives and reconnect with each other, undisturbed by hordes of tourists.
For those who need to stay connected, or work while away with the family or friends, the cottage has a good cell reception for most carriers, and a working space with a desk in the loft area. The quality of internet service can vary.
The open-concept ground floor consists of a small eat-in kitchen, with large glass doors that lead to an outdoor deck. Shaded by luscious trees , the deck is furnished with a very good propane BBQ and a patio furniture set. The kitchen is fully equipped with anything needed to prepare and serve most meals. Adjacent to the eat-in kitchen is a comfortable living room space, with a wood burning stove and a TV. A set of floor-to-ceiling windows allows a hint of the lakeview through the trees. On the second floor is an inviting bedroom with a queen size bed, and a semi-private area with a twin-size bed. The second bedroom, with two twin-size beds and a small walk-in closet, has another TV set. A three-piece bathroom is on the ground floor. The guest cabin can comfortably accommodate 4 guests (5 for an additional charge).
A selection of books, DVDs, toys and board games for all ages, and additional TV in the second-floor bedroom, are all made available for your indoor fun. A traditional wood-fired cedar sauna, next to the woodshed, can be enjoyed for additional relaxation. We provide our guests with the use of a good, stable canoe, a tandem and a single recreational kayak and two SUPs. There are also two metal boats that can be propelled by oars and fuelled by the power of your own muscles, for a quiet fishing venture. That said, we promote quiet vacationing and safe use of non-motorized water toys and recreational equipment as our small contribution to environmentally friendly and sustainable living and vacationing. We harvest sun energy with solar panels, on the south end of the property, and urge our guests to participate in recycling.
Guests can unwind while enjoying a tranquil stay, taking part in family-oriented activities on the property, or they can explore the natural beauty and outdoor features of the wider Algoma region. There are Muskoka-style chairs, a wooden picnic table, and a fire pit on the beach. From the lakeshore, you can indulge in the changing views of the stunning colours bathing the precipitous cliff rising above the lake. Or, you can savour the singing of birds, the calls of loons, and the sound of waves lapping against the shoreline.
A selection of paddles, oars and a few additional beach and lawn toys are in the blue beach shed, and in the sauna. The property is suitable for the welcoming of Spring in May and early June. In the Summer, one can engage in a variety of water recreational activities, stroll on the hiking trails, and shop for fresh organic produce and locally made products from area farms, including a couple of nearby alpaca farms. There are many lakes and waterfalls throughout the wider Algoma region to be discovered, including the Aubrey Falls Provincial Park with its hiking trails (50 minutes drive from the cottage). In the Fall, hiking trails and breath-taking views of rolling hills, lakes and rivers amid the changing foliage make it worthwhile visiting this gorgeous region of the Canadian Shield. Given the right conditions, you might be able to catch the Northern Lights! (https://www.northernontario.travel/algoma-country/auroras-in-algoma).
The nearby towns - Iron Bridge, Thessalon, Bruce Mines and Little Rapids – offer essential services and conveniences such as grocery, an LCBO, pharmacies and health services, cafes, or restaurants, and, for antiquing enthusiasts, several antique stores that sometimes turn-up hidden treasures.
During high season (June 20 to September 5) this cottage may be rented together with the main cabin on the same property (see another listing on this site for "Timber-frame cottage on a crystal-clear lake in Northern Ontario").
Please note that the cottage is located ca. one hour away from Sault Ste. Marie; three hours from Sudbury; six hours from Toronto, and seven from Ottawa. Well-worth the trip - saves you from the urge to get on the plane and globe-trot! There is much to discover in the vast and gorgeous Algoma country, whose landscapes inspired the Group of Seven painters.
