The Alexandrinsky Theatre is at the heart of St. Petersburg’s cultural scene, staging dance and theater shows, as well as other events throughout the year. Built under orders of Empress Elizabeth in 1756, the original theater was made of wood. Increasing public demand called for a larger space and in 1832, the wooden construction was replaced by the larger neoclassical building that you see today. On approach to the theater, note the attention-stealing Chariot of Apollo sculpture on the roof. Set above the columns of the lemon-yellow and white façade, this sculpture depicts four rearing horses driving the Greek god’s chariot.
Insides the niches, look for additional statues depicting Melpomene and Thalia, the muses of tragedy and comedy. For fans of dance, it’s worth booking tickets for one of the popular ballet performances. Drawing audiences from across the world, these productions showcase both modern and classical ballet styles.
Although the ballet is the biggest draw, the theater building itself is undeniably beautiful. If you’re going to see a performance, be sure to arrive early so you have time to check out the sumptuous interior, which still retains its original 18th-century grandeur. The circular auditorium is a highlight, with a spacious stage, red seats and fine gold decorative finishes. Try to spot the regal czar’s box, one of only a few features that have survived from architect Carlo Rossi’s original interior plan.
Besides dance, this theater is also widely acknowledged as the home of Russian drama. Throughout the years it has hosted the premieres of plays by eminent Russian playwrights such as Anton Chekhov and Alexander Ostrovsky.
