Oxford Abingdon Hotel

Marcham Road, Abingdon - Map
The Hotel was advertised as "4 Pillars" however, it has now been taken over by OAH (Oxford Abingdon Hotels). Perhaps the advertising needs updating! The Hotel is very handy for the general area of Abingdon, Oxford, Wantage, Didcot etc.. The Hotel suited our needs however, after declaring I was disabled, the bathroom only had a shower over the bath and it was extremely slippery. The woodwork and bath surround silicone needs attention. The carpet was quite badly marked and the floorboards were extremely noisy. That is all the negative points as the Staff were very good, very helpful and always friendly A good breakfast was available with the area controlled by two long term staff, Phyllis and Helen. They recognised us even after a year... good customer service. It was a good stay and I'm sure with the takeover, the points I made will be addressed. We will stay there again.

"Inexpensive hotel with some luxurious elements"
This hotel has some positive and negative features. The entrance lobby is beautiful, the setting of the hotel is pleasant, and I enjoyed waking up to a lovely view of a blossom tree and hearing the dawn chorus. The staff were reasonably helpful, and the breakfast was tasty (although I could have done without the very loud radio in the restuarant at 7am). There was a very old fashioned bath/shower combo, with extremely slow draining sink and bath that were both quite bad to use. They sent a workman to address this, but he was unable to fix it. In addition, although superficially the room was reasonably clean, it was actually very dirty behind the radiatior, and the carpet was quite grubby. Also, beware that there are no tea making facilities in the rooms, and the tap water is undrinkable. Instead, there are tea stations and water stills in a few places around the hotel, but my nearest one required a trip across the outdoor courtyard and down a few corridors, which was a little inconvenient. Probably still better than travelodge!

"Great hotel"
We often stay in the Abingdon area as we visit relatives every few weeks and sometimes stay nearby. For some reason we'd not come across the Dog House but we're glad we did! The staff were welcoming and helpful, the room was large, clean and quiet. The bed was fabulous. Breakfast was good too. We ate dinner in the restaurant which was fine - the food was ok - not brilliant, but the service was attentive and again the staff were very pleasant. We'll definitely be returning.

"Nice pub handy for Abingdon area"
A warm welcome as I arrived and the room was cosy, clean and comfortable with a good ensuite and shower. Breakfast was delicious and freshly cooked to order. Evening meals were tasty and good value and the Abingdon Bridge ale was excellent! You need a car here but it is very easy then to get out and about in the area.

    Abingdon Hotels Guide

Abingdon is a quiet town on the banks of the Thames, and one of the oldest settlements in Britain. The town centre is dominated by the handsome former county hall which is now a museum, and the almshouses behind St. Helen's church are worth strolling around. Abingdon maintains the tradition of Morris Dancing, and every midsummer holds a traditional parade to elect a mock mayor.
