"Nowhere near as nice as the Waterloo Place hotel"
Although the same chain, and looking modern from the outside, this hotel is actually just a very 60s building that's been superficially remodelled. The room we had was very old and tired, although with a lovely modern bathroom. No aircon or control over the room temperature, old windows one of which didn't open, and the lifts in the property are terrifying. Despite being on the fourth floor we used the stairs as much as possible. So for what you get, it's very expensive, and rather disappointing.

"Fab few days at Edinburgh Fringe "
Hotel in fantastic city location for enjoying the Fringe festival and other sights. In the Grassmarket area with a view of the castle from the bedroom window. Restaurants, bars and street entertainment opposite and many venues within easy reach. A short but steep uphill walk to the castle and Royal Mile with Princes Street and other attractions further away but still accessible on foot if you like walking and don't mind some steps or hills in this stunningly beautiful city. Hotel lacks character but is modern and clean. It would have been helpful to know beforehand that guests could use the pool and gym facilities of its sister hotel nearby. Staff helpful and courteous but a bit of a mix up at check-in when we were sent to the sister hotel then back again. Didn't manage to make the WiFi work but didn't try very hard. All in all a lovely stay.

"Great location and huge rooms"
Superb place to stay in Edinburgh especially during the festival. Huge room with bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. With a Tesco around the corner you can easily stock up on breakfast especially when breakfast might not be at 9am like other hotels. Couldn't be closer to the main Fringe locations such as the Pleasance, Just the Tonic and Udderbelly. And yes it's Fringe prices but it was one of the cheapest places we found during the fringe that didn't involve a 45 walk to start the day.

"One of the best."
We were early but our room was ready and we had obviously been upgraded as the bed was a super king. Spotless room, beautiful bathroom. Bed so comfortable and pillows gorgeous (often they are not). Lovely staff especially the concierge service guys who are helpful without being overbearing and remembered our names even though we only stayed one night. Two tiny blips. Housekeeping knocked to be let in at 9am to clean when it should be known to them who has checked out and who has not. Breakfast was super. Coffee and toast a bit slow to arrive. Minor points when everything else was really excellent. A cool location within a short walk of Arthur's Seat. Great views from there and the city also on your doorstep without being in the middle of the crowds.

"4 star hotel in a superb location."
The Carlton is just a few yards from the junction of the North Bridge and The Royal Mile, so a great location enabling you to easily pop out for a while and pop back. A couple of doors away is the Patisserie Valerie which great for a coffee, cake or snack. The room was good, but I've rated the cleanliness as terrible because by 4:10pm the room had still not been serviced. I had to ring reception just so that I could get clean towels. The buffet breakfast is very good, and the evening meals are very reasonably priced - and good. The only thing that put me off was a photo on the wall of some scruffy guy smoking! Who thought that was a good idea?

Pocket Guide: Edinburgh Old Town 4 stars Hotels

With narrow, winding streets and alleys, this mediaeval district is a contrast to New Town. Acting as the main artery, the Royal Mile begins at Edinburgh Castle and ends at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Royal Family’s residence. Many tourist attractions are found in Old Town including the National Galleries, Royal Museum, and St. Giles Cathedral.
