Vila Gale Lagos

Estrada da Meia Praia s/n, Lagos - Map
"Good value for the area "
From what I could see this is one of the nicest hotels in Lagos but has a reasonable price. It's accessible from the train station by a 10 minute walk which is a great benefit.

"Underwhelming service but close to the beach"
If you stay at this hotel, you are paying for location and a nice breakfast buffet. You are in close walking distance to several beautiful beaches and the breakfast buffet includes a nice spread. But in terms of service and room quality, we were disappointed with our stay. When we arrived at the hotel for check-in, we were told to wait 30 minutes. When we came back, the reception staff told us that the lock on the door was broken and they had sent someone into town to buy a new lock and replace it. They could not give us a time certain when the door would be fixed and the only other room they would offer us was a downgrade from what we had booked. The hotel did not offer any kind of compensation for this significant inconvenience. I did ask for compensation during check-out and was told that management would be in contact with me. I have not yet heard back. On top of that, we would have to wait in a line every time we needed to speak with reception staff - as there was only one person staffing the front desk for a sizable hotel. As to our room, it was nice to have a spacious apartment accommodation as opposed to your typical hotel. That said, the TV was broken and the walls were VERY thin. We were woken up nightly by a crying baby on a separate floor from us. This did detract from our stay.

"Beautiful hotel, close to the beach, near Lagos"
We had a lovely 7 night stay at this hotel. It's was peaceful and tranquil except for the noisy neighbours upstairs that woke me up at 0600hrs daily and the occasional noise from the traffic. Staff are terrific. Lovely restaurants to dine in by the sea. Beautiful and lovely sandy beach. We took a bus to Lagos (can be done daily) to sight see. Took only 30mins. Will definitely return, and would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet relaxing. X

Marina Rio

Avenida Dos Descobrimentos, Lagos - Map
"Great base to explore Lagos"
This was the first small hotel we stayed in for a number of years and I will definitely be looking for more like this one. A Marina view room is a must unless you enjoy looking at buses. Don't be put off by its proximity to the road, as there is no traffic noise in the room. Obviously you will experience some on the balcony, but the Marina and promenade activities make up for this. The bed was really comfy, the bathroom modern with constant hot water, and there is a fridge for you to fill with your own purchases. Breakfast foods were fresh and plentiful. The staff are very relaxed and helpful. We didn't use the pool as we prefer the beach which was magnificent. It was our first visit to Lagos and we have never come across so many restaurants serving great food at really reasonable prices. Marina Rio was 5 mins walk from all the hustle and bustle. A really good base.

Pocket Guide: Algarve Lagos 4 stars Hotels

The region’s top resort, Lagos packs in history, character and wonderful beaches. The old centre, partly walled, features local shops next to fashionable restaurants and nightspots, favoured by independent travellers as well as package holidaymakers. The Algarve’s best museum, a gilded chapel, a sea fort and various monuments recall the town’s heyday. Its beaches range from a broad, long town beach to picture-postcard coves close by.
