Hotel Bannatyne Darlington

Southend Avenue, Darlington - Map
"Stop over to break up a long journey."
Although we only booked the hotel at short notice to break up a long journey we were delighted with the hotel and its facilities. There was a large wedding party when we arrived but the staff were still able to accommodate and look after us even though they were busy with this major event. The room was comfortable and clean. We were well placed to walk into the town and because the hotel was so busy decided to eat away from the hotel on the evening of our arrival. Breakfast was included, buffet style, and was tasty and plentiful. Again the restaurant was busy because of the large wedding party but the staff were efficient and helpful ensuring that service was smooth and not slow. It was a shame we only had one night but our plans were fairly tight. I would definitely recommend the property and if I was in the area again would consider staying again.

Staincliffe Hotel

The Cliff, Hartlepool - Map
"Most prominent hotel on the Sea Front, Seaton Care"
Easy to find. Plenty of parking. Reception desk is just a table at the back of the entrance hall. No lift. Upstairs corridors old, narrow and poky. Only Yale lock on room door. Only one room key provided. General internal decoration of hotel very tired. Room very small as en suite but everything worked. Only 1 room chair, no room for another. Bathroom functional but previous repairs very obvious. Stalk very friendly and helpful. Dining room very reasonable size but very quiet. Table settings etc. good. Adequately variable menu and food better in quality, quantity and preparation than I had expected. I put bar and restaurant charges on account. Bill probably correct, certainly not overcharged. Total cost surprisingly reasonable. General impression. Old fashioned sea side hotel which had been only partly modernised. Clearly client throughput disappointing. Staff doing their best to compensate with some success. Bill handling procedures may need a tune up.

Douglas Hotel - Hartlepool Hotels

Douglas Hotel

2 Grange Road, Hartlepool - Map
"Hotel is fine but no parking facilities"
My room was small with nowhere but the bed to sit. Large, fully tiled and spotlessly clean bathroom. The food was good with a varied menu cooked with fresh ingredients but slightly pricey. For me breakfast was too late starting at 7, it is included in the rate and I was not offered a discount or anything to compensate for this. The biggest disappointment was the lack of any off street parking in an area where car theft is rife. The lack of parking should be flagged in the promotional blurb, it will certainly stop me from staying again. Overall though the Douglas is reasonable value for money.

The Punch Bowl Inn

Edmundbyers, Consett - Map
"Lovely village and excellent pub."
We were lucky to get a room at the Punch Bowl to break our journey south from a visit to Hadrian's Wall. This was a last minute and unplanned Bank Holiday booking after we stayed an extra day looking at Roman sites. The Punch Bowl is highly praised by many visitors and fully deserves all the favourable reviews.
