"Beach Town Comfort"
I arrived late at night and the owner had left a note on the door with my name and room number. As I started up the stairs, the owner appeared and led me to my room with charming warmth. The room was comfortable and I could hear the waves. The hotel is very close to town and the beach. I was there in the offseason, so the town was very quiet. It was just right for me.

"We loved it!"
Walking distance to Agia Plagia beach and shops. Bus stop to Heraklion at the door. Note; Hotel has quite a few stairs which may not be good for elderly travellers. Only few staff members speak english however they are very friendly and helpful.

"One night"
I stayed here with my wife and daughter as our flight was arriving in Crete at stupid o'clock in the morning and our main hotel for our stay would not have room ready until after 14:00.. This was all due the airline changing the flight times.. I opted for the Handakas due to its good reviews and its location being over the room from our primary hotel... The staff are lovely and seem like they cannot do enough to help you.. That was a great welcome to Crete and one we remembered thoughout our stay and to this day.. The room we had was a little knackered but we made the best of it seeing as it was only going to be for about 8 hours so we could get out heads down for a little while then get some breakfast and them decamp to our hotel across the road...

"Beautiful building, in the heart of Old Malia."
I cannot describe just how kind, thoughtful and generous George, his father and Maria were right from the start, and all through the 5 nights we stayed there. I had forgotten a plug adaptor: George provided one - though I found out on the final day of our holiday that they are available to buy at the mini-mart 50m away. I was on crutches, which made access to the rooms a little unwieldy, but our hosts could not do enough for us. We were invited to join them in the evening on the patio, where they shared food and drinks with us. (The fresh figs were delicious). Old Malia is so quiet in the evening, that you can hear everyone and everything around you. During the night, the heat was such that we needed to keep doors open, which meant that the noise of the cicadas was deafening, and the antics of the very drunk party people next door were clearly audible. Nothing that the owners of Villa Contessa could do about that, but if you are going during the 'season', I suggest that you pack a pair of earplugs - max strength - if like me, you are used to a very quiet environment. We booked a number of activities during our stay. Pick ups were available for all, and even with the unexpected addition of my crutches, the people of Crete could not have been kinder. They were determined that we should enjoy our time and experiences with them. If I had known about the scooter/quad-bike hire before we left, I would have been tempted to explore inland a little more. Defo going back!
