One of the few “open cities” with no immigration restrictions, Shanghai became a haven for Jews often unable to leave their homelands due to visa requirements. Over the course of the mid-20th century, tens of thousands of Jewish people had escaped persecution and relocated to the Hongku District of Shanghai. Though the living conditions were not always ideal the Jewish refugees were able to thrive amidst adversity, even opening bakeries, synagogues, schools, and a newspaper.
Visit the Ohel Moishe Synagogue, which served as the spiritual heart of Shanghai’s Jewish community and currently houses the Museum for Jewish Refugees. Built in 1927, it has been reconstructed to its original condition and features a photo exhibition from the period. You’ll also stop at Huoshan Park, a peaceful retreat where the Monument in Memory of Jewish Refugees now stands. Wander along Duolon Road and soak up the history and culture of early to mid-20th century Shanghai. Stroll among the museums, antique houses, calligraphers’ studios, bookshops, teahouses, and wine bars.
