Look out for increased demand for flights and hotels. According to a recent Expedia.ca/Ipsos-Reid survey, 35 per cent of Canadians plan to get away this summer to a destination involving paid accommodation and travel, and they plan to spend an average of $2,320 per person, or $18.5 billion in total. Additionally, ninety-two per cent of Canadians expect to travel the same or more as last year – and right now is the most popular time to make summer bookings as 46 per cent of Canadians complete their summer travel plans in the spring. “Destinations within Canada continue to have great appeal as intention to travel within the country is up 14 per cent over last year among summer leisure travellers,” says Sean Shannon, managing director of Expedia.ca. “Canadians’ enthusiasm to seize the summer with a getaway within Canada or abroad continues to grow – and planning ahead is essential with airline carriers and accommodations, as well as the passport office. Fortunately, Canadian leisure travellers have embraced the power of the Internet to make their summer travel bookings fast and easy as 67 per cent of summer vacationers have made an online booking in the past 2 years.”
Ipsos-Reid These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid/Expedia.ca survey conducted from April 5 to April 10, 2007. For the survey, a representative randomly selected sample of 3199 adult Canadians was interviewed by telephone. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within ±1.7 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Canadian population been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Canadian population according to Census data.
