The Scene Not only is St. Elmo Indy's first steak restaurant, it's Indy's original restaurant, period. What has worked since 1902, from the traditional charbroiling method to the dark wood and gaslight-era decor, still works today at this downtown landmark.
The Food As soon as you hit the door, the smoky aroma of charbroiled meat hits your nose. Fat wooden steak knives wait at the table, their handles worn smooth over the years of sliding through 24-ounce strips and 14-ounce filets. Have a legendary shrimp cocktail with horseradish sauce before your steak. At 32 ounces, the cut-to-order prime rib is almost embarrassing to order, but worth every sideways glance. Each cut is lightly seasoned and aged for 18 to 21 days before it hits the extreme temperature of the broiler, a simple but fastidious standard that produces consistently superb meat.
