Due west of the capital, much of West Lothian is industrial and of limited interest to tourists. Where it meets the Firth of Forth however, South Queensferry is a charming small waterside town with great views of the magnificent Forth Bridges. Boats go from here to peaceful Inchcolm Island with its ruined abbey. Nearby is the grand 18th-century pile of Hopetoun House, and the splendid ruins of Mary Queen of Scots’ birthplace, Linlithgow Palace.
