“toronto dont”
not great
“Great location, great people, SAFE neighborhood, cheap parking - all OK”
This is a great budget place. When reading reviews one must be careful to read between the lines. Many comments were about the "Sketchy" neighborhood, which, if you prefer the modern shopping areas to surround you, is certainly not for you. If you want to stay in a real neighborhood, this is for you. Some people just feel uncomfortable being around people "poorer" than they are. How sad. Manager was great. Could not set up wireless immediately and he came up to the room and got it done right away. Free wireless/LAN connection, 3 local newspapers, $4 parking (vs. $19 at the Super 8 down the street), nice little kitchen, great water pressure and a nice bathtub. Very nice and helpful staff. Cheapest in downtown area, great location. I hope that if anyone has a REAL problem, they will report it, instead of just complaining because things may be "different" from their norm. The manager summed it up perfectly - "it's not fancy, but we try to make it comfortable." It's a great place We stayed 2 nights and would go back in a Texas heartbeat.
“OK hotel”
Good location, near chinatown, parking not expensive, long women hair on bathroom floor.OK rate for location.
“Named like buildings in the nearby arts district, but situated next to low income housing”
The hotel and service were just okay. The hotel was a little run down and a few decades old. On the plus side, this hotel had location under wraps - it was within walking distance of AGO, Chinatown, Queen's Street and U of T, among others. But unfortunately it is next door to low income housing in a neighbourhood that is rough around the edges - but struck me as still being a relatively safe place in downtown Toronto. The hotel was very inexpensive, which was the reason I booked it. I got what I paid for here, so no surprises.
“The Dirty Grange”
This hotel is a retro fitted 1960's single bedroom apartment building located in the center of china town. The rooms are small and run down. THe whole building had a terrible smell to it. The location was excellent though, its walking distance from the rogers center/cn tower/ the harbour etc.
“Would definitely recommend”
Great customer service. They have someone at the front desk 24/7. I got drunk one night and lost my keys, the charge for new keys was $10. They let me in right away though after they verified my information. The next day I threw up on the carpet. The cleaning lady had already ended her shift but they sent her to my room to clean up which was very nice of them. I left the cleaning lady a tip. It's a little tricky to get there which is the only con. Other than that I would highly recommend this hotel because it is cheap and close to a lot of bars and within walking distance of the main attractions in downtown.
“A little icky, in a good location”
Other reviews described this place pretty well. The general location is very good, but the general vicinity is a bit run down. There is a bit of an ick factor here at the hotel though. Some of the office staff seem creepy and untrustworthy, though others seem fine. It also seems as though this place doubles as a transient hotel, with some down and outers hanging around. There was never any trouble to our sight though I would not be surprised if there were. Also our room had an odour of old french fries which never went away even with the windows wide open. Despite all that, the hotel was priced reasonably, we had a great time, and could could walk everywhere. Take a chance? Your call.
“If you are on a budget this is a great value!”
It's good value for money and a good location so you can walk anywhere. Loved the free internet too. Parking is very easy and convenient, only $4 per night. We stayed 2 nights and had clean towels every day.
“Reasonable hotel at a very good price”
Location was quite central, easy transit ride to downtown and short walking distance to several of the main attractions and good restrauants. Older, looks like a converted apartment building but if all you want is somewhere to stay at a reasonable price, this is a good choice. In a mainly residential neighbourhood, which has some 'run down' sections, but seemed safe enough. Hotel staff were helpful, at least they checked us in very quickly, room was fairly basic but was clean. Limited TV / DVD equipment, but then if you're in the city at at hotel you probably weren't planning to spend the time watching TV. Overall, basically a place to stay that didn't cost too much and was well located and we would stay there again.
“convenient and inexpensive”
I got a clean, reasonably sized single room with kitchenette (which I didn't use.) Convenient for Kensington Market and Chinatown, though the immediate surroundings aren't very impressive. Doesn't have all the room service options that more expensive hotels might have, but it's a good option for budget travellers who plan to walk or use the TTC during their visit.
