Stay at Maplewood Inn, Syracuse, NY

Posted 19-Jul-2014
Pros: It was a roof over our heads and close to the airport.
Cons: Decor is dreary. "let's hide the dirt beige and brown.
Location: Near airport, two exits away. Close to Downtown Syracuse.
Our bed was like sleeping on a board, very hard. Pretty dreary decor. I believe our biggest turn off was the eating cafe. The bartender was shoving food in her mouth while on the job, licking her fingers, not washing her hands then handling drink condiments like lemon and lime pieces. She also had her hands in her hair twisting it around and again not washing her hands. My husband's mix drink was so watered down from scooping ice that was melted in water that he sent it back. He asked for a medium burger---it was raw in the center. And still cold. Last, but not least, there was a strong urine odor just outside the inside door to enter this eating establishment. That should have been the first clue. We stayed at a La Quinta in Macon, GA last night. I can see why my husband always stays at La Quinta when he travels here. Great place and great staff.

baseball tournament

Posted 17-Jul-2014
Pros: Location
Cons: Room didn't seem to be thoughly cleaned daily. Bed, bath was addressed, but if something wasn't in the garbage can it was left.
Easy to find for out of towners, very close to baseball diamonds. Choices nearby for dinner, or good restaurant onsite.

Clean newer hotel

Posted 17-Jul-2014
Pros: Pool could have been bigger and continental breakfast would have been good.
Cons: Dryers could be updated.
Location: Restaurants and not far from a large shopping mall.
Room was spacious even with two queen size beds. Walking space in the room even with three people's luggage. Fridge and microwave was a nice touch.

Clean and quiet

Posted 11-Jul-2014
Pleasant hotel, rooms are large, clean, and not very dated. Heard relatively little noise from outside the room. The staff seems to care about their work. Bar staff remembered us the second and third day and the food was generally pleasing. They make their own potato chips, which were crunchy yet still fluffy and their boneless chicken tenders are breaded by them using real chicken breast slices carefully fried resulting in a tender snack. The ribs fall off the bone and they really do give you a full slab, which is a lot of food. Most restaurants try to serve 1/2 to 3/4 rack as a "full rack". Only negatives about the hotel is that the room lighting is fairly poor and there is no dresser or bureau to place items for a longer stay. The only flat surface is the desk, which is placed right next to the air conditioner. I like cold rooms, but working next to the AC is not very pleasant. The on-site massage facility called Elan was an excellent opportunity to relax after a 7 hour drive, though scheduling was (understandably) limited trying to book the same day, but they got me in and Christina does an excellent deep tissue massage. I almost did not stay here because I was unfamiliar with the hotel as it is not one of the recognized big chains where we all feel we know what we will get. That was a mistake, thanks to Expedia's pictures and positive ratings. I look forward to returning when I visit Syracuse.

Good value.

Posted 8-Jul-2014
Pros: Quiet. Location nearby restaurants.
Cons: softer or flatter pillows
We were pleasantly surprised when muffins and coffee were provided for breakfast. The muffins were as good as homemade(high praise in my book), and the coffee was also good, not too weak like in some hotels. The room was large and very quiet. A big bonus for location right across from Tully's and near a Dunkin Donuts and Friendly's.

Nice sleep-on-the-way hotel

Posted 30-Jun-2014
Pros: The staff
Location: Great location - just off the highway
We were on our way to New York from Toronto. Location was great - just off the high-way. Room was clean and the staff was very nice and accommodating: there was a party going on in the hotel bar which we were told will be over by 23:00 (we checked in 22:30). very slight noise from the party came in to our room. I called and asked if another room is available, and with no questions at all, we were immediately moved, with apologies that the layout of the room is different from the one we booked (which was just fine for us). The staff really make the difference for us, as we were tiered and just wanted to crash, I was expecting some "party will soon be over" but they were trying their best to make us feel better.

Big disappointment

Posted 28-Jun-2014
Pros: The room appeared clean and there were plenty of places to charge cell phones and tablets.
We arrived at the hotel to drop off our luggage, return our rental and use the shuttle back to the hotel. We were told the shuttle wasn't working, and hadn't been for a week. We had to pay an extra days rental on our rental car because of that - we had chosen the hotel because of the shuttle! Then we get to our room and there are no pillows on the bed, they were all on a chair near the bed. The pillows were very uncomfortable. I finally got a towel from the bathroom and used it as a pillow. The AC was so noisy that it awakened us every time it turned on or off all night long. The restaurant was no longer open for breakfast, and they hadn't gotten set up for a continental breakfast yet. They did put out some granola bars for breakfast. The owner obviously wasn't trying to live up to what had been advertised. The owner could have rented a van to use as a shuttle, and it doesn't take long to go to the grocery and buy some cereal, milk and muffins.
