Strasbourg is situated by the German border, where the Ill River flows into the Rhine. The city's historical centre is beautifully preserved and was the first city centre, in its entirety, to be designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Attractions include a sandstone Gothic Cathedral with astronomical clock and the Petite-France district, with medieval timber-frame buildings.
