We only stayed one night at Dom Dostoevskogo, but it was superb. When I book a budget hotel, I tend to relax my standards: I expect budget accommodation to be less clean, less quiet, and less welcoming than more expensive hotels. Dom Dostoevskogo was none of these things. The staff was very helpful when we checked in, providing us with plenty of information about what to see in St. Petersburg. Our room and bathroom were clean, spacious, and quiet. The free breakfast in the morning included all of the fundamentals: toast, spreads, eggs, juice, and fresh coffee. Additionally, the hotel is close enough to the city center that you can walk to most of the tourist attractions, including the Hermitage museum and several cathedrals. If you prefer to take the metro, though, there's a station two minutes away.
Most important, though, the staff were very welcoming toward my girlfriend and me. As a lesbian couple in Russia, we were warned time and again to keep our relationship under wraps, but the staff at Dom Dostoevskogo were perfectly friendly and respectful. Thank you for the wonderful stay!
