“Suited our needs”

This hotel is adequate/average. The breakfast is pretty typical for a continental breakfast...waffles, bread for toast, English muffins, hot and cold cereal, juices, hard boiled eggs, and coffee. There is coffee 24/7 in the lobby, which is kind of nice. Our room was clean and neat. Some other reviews were unhappy about the noise in the hallways. We had no problems with that.

“Noisy guests made our stay unpleasant”

We checked into the hotel rather late, but the guests staying in the room above us were still awake and extremely noisy. Their noise continued until we checked out at 9am. I don't think I'll be staying here again.

“TOO HOT TO SLEEP”

Overall, this hotel was ok. The major problem that we had was that the AC wouldn't work and there are no outside windows to open. It was 90 degrees in our room and got very little sleep because it was so hot. If the AC worked, I would absolutely stay there again and recommend this hotel to anyone. Every room was hot not just ours, you would think that they would get someone in right away and fix the AC for the building but that did not happen.

“Was expecting a lot more.”

It was extremely warm. The thermostat didnt work. The Extra lock jaw in the door was broken. We had an upfront view of the dumpster. Lobby wreaks of chlorine.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

This is an older hotel. Upon our evening arrival, we were disappointed to learn that we needed to lug our baggage up to the second floor because there isn’t an elevator. The room was cold so we turned the heat up to 72 degrees. We went right to sleep in comfortable beds but spent a cold night. We left for activities early the next morning after a great breakfast. Upon evening return to the hotel we found that our key wouldn’t open the door. So, I walked back down to the desk and got a newly activated key. Upon opening the door, we discovered the room was still cold and hadn’t been cleaned. When I complained, I was told that guests need to ask specifically for room cleaning. I hoped at least for clean towels but was told they were out. I collected two pool towels. It was all they had. When I asked if all the rooms are cold, I was told the thermostat on the wall doesn’t control heat. There is a base board heater (behind a chair) with a control on the unit. If I wanted heat, that unit needed to be turned on. I asked why these two important issues weren’t disclosed at check in. The clerk responded, “I didn’t check you in.” We cleaned the room ourselves and went to sleep. At midnight, we were wakened by the phone ringing. A different clerk explained our key had been de-activated because the check in clerk forgot to get a credit card number and asked if I could stop by the desk in the morning. It was the final blow. We were not happy with this hotel.

“mattresses suck”

The hotel is in a great location near Hamline University. Our son attends college at Hamline and it is nice to be so close. We love the atmosphere of the old train station!!. Our BIGGEST complaint is the comfort of the beds. The mattresses are so hard it makes for a very long, uncomfortable night. We don't get any sleep. We wish they would upgrade their mattresses then we would recommend this hotel to everyone. We will be taking our business elsewhere from now on. :(

“Our room was not great”

The hotel itself was nice and clean. I liked the train element, but our room was not impressive. We had water on our bathroom floor and the beds were very low and uncomfortable.

“Dirty hotel, dirty rooms”

The hotel was out of non smoking double bed rooms even though I booked one. The staff was very nice and gave me a suite but it still only had one bed and a pull out couch which was stained and very uncomfortable. Also, the TV does not have cable. There were crumbs on the dining table and the bathroom did not have shampoo or conditioner. The hotel itself is in poor shape. The floor has exposed cement and the walls are marked up and dirty. I would not go back to this hotel.

“Sleepless in Saint Paul”

We were disappointed in this hotel. Amenities were about what I expected after reading other reviews - a little rundown, but ok. Our room was remodeled & fine, but still some problems (bathroom door did not latch, thermostat on wall did not control the room temp, the door to hallway needed to be pulled shut, etc.). Bigger disappointment was that the heater in the pool was broken - swimming impossible because pool was the temperature of ice water. And most annoying was the loud noise (we were in a room facing the outside of the building but still could hear what seemed to be pool noise + everything in the hall) and clearly heard Saint Paul police in the hall at 2:00 in the morning, due to a noise complaint. Worst night of sleep ever. This hotel could be ok, but I would NOT recommend it on a weekend! And I would personally never stay there again. 1/17/2011
