“historic place”
The Fairmont Algonquin was a nice historic place to stay for the money. Just remember it is an old inn but very charming.
“A nice stay ....”
The Algonquin is a beautiful old hotel. The main building has very nice rooms but really needs some work. Peeling paint in bathroom ceilings etc. Nothing that appears serious but with the prices charged it should be immaculately kept. The newer Prince of Wales wing is also very nice, more modern since it's only 20 years old, and more comfortable. As of Dec. 31st Fairmont will no longer run this hotel. Since it's a provincial property let's hope that the province does some serios updating of the property. It's just too beautiful to let it go!! I love staying here and will come back again and again. It is truly a spectacular hotel that needs some TLC. By all means go!!
“too bad it's over”
it is apparent from the lack of investment in the exterior of this hotel that it no longer fits in the Fairmont model. It is a wonderful experiance to visit St Andrews and the Algonquin just enhances that.
“A Lovely Place to Rest & Recharge”
A lovely hotel in a quiet, charming town. About a 10 min walk away from the main tourist / waterfront area and about 5 min walk away from Kingsbrae Gardens. Room was beautiful, and came with small kitchenette...microwave & fridge. Outdoor swimming pool in front of the hotel was heated. Great place to retreat from the fast pace of the city.
“Not so tired”
After reading some reviews on here... I was a little skeptic about booking but did anyways. The building might be old but still has that Fairmont charm. Hotel room was comfortable with sea breeze blowing in. Ended up having a great dinner at The Library overlooking the ocean. And as always, service was perfect. Yes, its the not the Banff Springs, nor the Empress. But I love staying in these historic hotels with great service and would recomment this one to anybody!
“Good, but not great, hotel”
Aside for our difficulties at check-in -- see above -- the hotel staff was friendly and helpful. We were surprised, however, that we had no guide to the hotel in the room: floor plans (it's very large and rambling), restaurant locations and menus, would have been very helpful. . The one meal we ate in the hotel --one breakfast -- turned out to be basically a buffet: fine and quite generous, but somehow routine. (Though you could order at the table, the staff encouraged everyone to take the buffet option.) In September the hotel seems to cater largely to Canadian business conferences. But it has a beautiful location overlooking Passamaquoddy Bay and is an easy ten-minute walk to the village and waterfront.
“Old - and not in a good way”
This is probably one of the worst hotel experiences we have had. This hotel is old, run down and in desperate need of a multi-million dollar renovation. It is a big hotel and clearly not making enough money to keep up with the repairs. The paint that isn't already peeling is badly scuffed up. Dirty, stained carpeting, beat up furniture and a filthy swimming pool complete the picture. There was internet access, but not WiFi, no desk either - just sit in a chair with your laptop tethered to the wall. The bathroom was clean, but with small sink (cracked) and no countertop - the tub, tiles and fixtures just as they were in 1970. We slept for a few hours in a stuffy room (no air conditioning) and we couldn't wait to leave. The staff is friendly, but I certainly would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
“Good experience!”
Our Service dog has been very well welcome. It was our first trip with him. I'd recommand this hotel.
“A real Charmer”
Authentic old-time resort luxury--very accomodating staff--convenient location, easy walk to St. Andrew's Main Street. Cons: no A/C, very pricey restaurants.
“I will return”
I wish I had had a few days at The Fairmount Algonquin rather than one night. The bed was comfortable and the room well appointed. Perhaps next summer.
