“With a few adjustments would be 4 star, but not quite there yet...”
The hotel is well located near, but not in San Gimigignao and has excellent views back to the town. The hotel staff are generally friendly and helpful and the hotel modern, clean and efficient. The hotel provides a free shuttle (on request) to and from the town during the day. Our biggest disappointment was to find that in a 4 Star hotel the "in room" air con had been switched off (in a warm October) and this left the room slowly getting hotter (24-25 C over night), which left us leaving windows open and getting bitten! I am not sure why a four star hotel does not leave the guest to control the temperature of their room, it should! Like other reviews we were also disappointed to find the inside SPA (including swimming pool) was not accessible without substantial additional payment. The hotel restaurant was good for breakfast, with a good buffet selection, nice tables, etc. However the area used for evening meals left couples with round tables for 6 to 8 people and lacked atmosphere. Given the location they could have easily attracted us to stay at the hotel more than twice in 7 nights that we did. To do this the menu (more flexible), restaurant atmosphere and cost (definitely 4 star prices) need to be better, all within their control if they spent the time and effort. All that said, if you want a safe option, modern room, cleanliness, helpful staff, quite location and wonderful views this is a good three (but not four) star hotel.
“Good Location”
Although this is a nice hotel in a great location, we were disappointed to find out on arrival that the spa facilities were not included in the price we paid. This is not clear on the website, so if you are expecting a leisurely stay note that use of these facilities is at an additional daily rate per person, significantly above daily rates for UK gyms. Also, we went out of season at the end of September and the AC had been turned off even though it was still very warm. Breakfast offers a good variety, but for other meals the restaurant is very pricy. You should be aware that it is a brisk, uphill walk of about half an hour into San Gimingnano, although daily parking outside the town is available akin to UK city centre parking rates.
“Great view, poor value”
The view from the hotel is gorgeous. Then again, it's not difficult to find a nice vista in this area. Every staff member I encountered was very polite and helpful. The room was clean and spacious, but otherwise nothing special. there was little to no noise insulation, so the people speaking down the hall was disruptive. Also, the fan in the bathroom turned on, seemingly at random (I hadn't been in the bathroom) and was loud and annoying. Beds were of less than average comfort, and the wifi seemed spotty. There were an assortment of remotes for the tv, but I didn't bother with them much. The hours of the pool, i was told, were from 3pm-8pm, but i think that was because it was being cleaned. I almost booked this hotel for two nights, but am glad it was only for one. I think it would be ok for about 40% of the price. I feel I would have been just as well off booking a much less expensive room in town. It's a bit of a hike from the hotel to San Gimignano, so make sure you either have transportation or like hiking.
