Great hotel downtown

Pros: Everything. People were great, facility was awesome and I'm a hotel snob now as a result of my wife wanting only the best ;-)
Cons: Nothing
Location: Right in the middle of downtown. Great high end mall across the street. Lots to see and do. Across the river from the Bund. Great views.
I only spent 1 night but everything was awesome. The property is beautiful. The people are very helpful and for the most part spoke good English.

Large and impersonal.

Pros: Great dining buffet and breakfast. Good location across the road from large shopping mall with restuarants close by.
Cons: Had river view room with great view but room lacked any appeal but thats my taste.
Location: MRT station is about 6-7min easy walk away giving easy acces to city centre and elswhere. Easy walk across the road to the riverside promenade.
Stayed as part of tour group and with two additional days on own account. Impressive hotel and facilities. On checking out was presented with a bill for an additional 600RMB after some quering and pressing for what it was for, it was claimed to be for an early check in to the room (with the tour group) from 6am until normal check in time of 2pm on the day of our arrival. After repeatedly challenging the wrong details and insisting that the charge was incorrect they realised that in fact the tour group had checked in twelve hours late due to late flight connections. As this came to light on my own check out three days after the tour had completed and dispersed and if I had not stood my ground and refused to accept this erroneous charge I may have been slugged the extra charge without knowing what it was for.

For me as a Western Traveler with only occasional visits to China, Shanghai is an amazing, but too busy, traffic bound,and impersonal city. The Shangri-La Hotel is right in the middle of the newest and most ambitious part. New Skyscrapers everywhere. Brand name Malls and Stores. Restaurants on every floor of almost every building. Big downside is the traffic if you have to interact with the Puxi (West and Historic) side of the river. Can take an hour by taxi with a good chunk of it in the under-river tunnel. The functional breakfast and lunch food in the club lounges is good. Service is almost overwhelming. If you can't see your menu, someone appears with a flashlight over your shoulder. If you need a taxi, they run a quarter mile to flag one down. You have to run a gauntlet of greeters at every entrance, every elevator bank, every restaurant or club lounge. Nice Health club, pool, locker room, sauna, hot tub (could have been hotter). spa. Nothing bad to say except that it is culturally distant and therefore makes for an isolating stay.

Only stayed one night at the Shangri-la, but an amazing stay. World class amenities, the only thing I did not enjoy was the French restaurant on the top floor (the manager, French woman, was excellent, but the food left something to be desired for). The bar on the top floor was great, drinks were stiff. The room and bathroom were immaculate. They even brought me afternoon tea. Service was impeccable. Taxi from the airport runs about 200RMB, about a 45 minute ride during the late morning. Highly recommend!!!!

Pros: The service, accommodation and food.
I used the Hotel car twice on this visit and it was all very well organised. I was travelling alone and they collected me from the train station and were there waiting for me with an umbrella as it was raining very hard . I felt very safe. After a very tiring business trip in China I finished at the Shangri la and they made me feel very welcome on arrival and even checked me in in my room rather than at the front desk. It was faultless. I always stay at the Shangri la when possible when staying in China.

Location: Pudong is a great location for the pearl tower.

Disappointing stay

Where do i start? The nightmare check-in process. Greeted by a pretty Chinese woman, who was shouting..i had to ask her to speak softly and that i wasn't deaf, I said all this with a smile. She didn't listen obviously, as she kept on with her loud tone. Highly embarrassing, with quite a few people gathered at the lobby, going for dinner. Service at the hotel was overall poor - the breakfast staff..rude.Had dinner drinks at the Horizon Club - and they overcharged a glass of champagne - 582 RMB for one glass. When i asked the waiting staff if they had made a mistake after the bill was presented, they said no mistake. However when i checked out, the amount had been reduced and the explanation during checkout was 'sorry, yes, we made a mistake'. Dont need this hassle - horrible experience... NEVER will return. My client who was in the same hotel was as disappointed. We live and learn i suppose.
