“A Beautiful View for a Bargain Price”
I was very impressed with this hotel. Our second floor room had an impressive view of courtyard and the national theater across the street. The breakfast buffet was delicious and served in a lovely, bright dining room on the top floor of the hotel. We ate one night at the restaurant and had great service, delicious food, and fun coffee drinks. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. It was a great hotel, and a great bargain for the price. I also stayed at another hotel in San Jose, but for my next trip, I will spend all of my nights at the Gran Hotel Costa Rica!
“Really Great Return Experience!”
As usual, we were not disappointed by another great stay at the Gran Hotel Costa Rica!! The staff was friendly and helpful, and they honoured our request for an outside room looking over the Plaza de la Cultura (which can be loud, but is worth it for the view...if you are a light sleeper, just bring earplugs...the view cannot be missed, and it actually isn't too noisy at night). The breakfast was above and beyond what we expected!! I cannot wait to return. It has become my place to stay when I fly in our out of the country!
“Can't wait to go back”
We loved the location of the Gran Hotel Costa Rica. It was right in the middle of San Jose across from the National Theater. The breakfast buffet was wonderful and well worth it. The food at the restaurant downstairs was wonderful. Be mindful, the room we were in did not have air conditioning though the weather was comfortable.
“Great hotel”
What a wonderful hotel. The breakfast was wonderful. Truly a GRAND hotel. Great location.
“Best hotel in San Jose...”
San Jose itself was a waste of time....and we spent that at Gran Hotel and it was the nicest part of our stay. Get out of the city.
“Central location, Very helpful staff”
Gran Hotel Costa Rica has a generous breakfast buffet with a terrific view of the city. It's location makes walking to the downtown attractions and restaurants easy. The rooms are simple, clean and in good condition. The staff is great and this hotel makes for an easy stay in San Jose.
“Superb breakfast buffet. Centrally located. Classic retro style”
The hotel was built in the 1930's and the rooms are small but clean and comfortable. The downstairs exudes pre-WWII opulence with an open restaurant, fine table settings and overall excellent food. The breakfast buffet on the fifth floor is breathtaking. This is a great place to center a visit to Costa Rica.
“a diamond in the rough”
On a recent stay I found this hotel on a quiet side street off of the Grand Via to be a great value. Despite the fact that the hotel is old, it is well maintained and the staff trys very hard to please. Generally, this hotel comes in at around half of what comperable hotels do. Mere steps to the Gran Via and the Metro stop Callao. Very convenient location!
“Grand (for Central America)”
Old-style, 1930s deco elegance, beautiful tiled floors in the lobby, a set of chairs used by JFK on his Presidential visit in 1962 . . . all perfectly nice, though not as grand as it sounds. The front entrance should face some landscaped grounds, but instead it gives way immediately to a plaza that's a gathering spot for vendors and solicitors of all types. Rooms are on the small side, c. 1930s, but OK. It's right downtown, which has its pros (get a taste of life as most Ticos live it) and its cons (ditto).
“Will Return”
Everything was great....we were disappointed not to get a room with an outside view, but we did have a view of a little greenhouse area in the center of the hotel. The breakfast was above and beyond what we expected. When they said contenental breakfast, we expected cereal and cold breads, but it was a full breakfast with something for everyone! I would recommend it (and have) to anyone!
