“Great Stay - Looking forward to a return visit”

An older building containing 85 rooms, the Hotel Rex was perfectly located for my recent visit to San Francisco. 100 yards from the Powell Cable Car line and within walking distance to the Market this hotel is well situated. Great staff, warm welcome and the glass of wine in the Library while mingling with the other patrons was certainly an added bonus. You are a welcomed guest and you feel right at home from the moment you step through the doors. The hotel is nicely decorated and the room was very nice and tastefully done. Meals within the hotel are excellent and affordable. I certainly enjoyed my stay and I look forward to my return visit to the Hotel Rex.

“Excellent hotel and close to everything”

Came to SF to run in the marathon and had the pleasure to stay at the Rex. Couldn't have asked for anything better. The hotel itself has a classy vibe with its library and evening wine tastings (free for guests). The rooms were small but comfortable. I was worried about the outside noise being on the 2nd floor but it was surprisingly quiet. There's a cute little Pug named Maximo that sleeps in a chair in the hotel lobby. Didn't eat at the hotel so I can't comment on the food, but there's lots of places in the area. Great sushi and italian restaurants and the Rex is right around the corner from Sears Fine Food. We had breakfast there almost every day. Its a few minutes walk to Union Square and maybe 15-20 walk to the Embarcadero. There's a crazy hill one block north but if you walk east a little bit and then go up its not as steep. We walked pretty much everywhere from the hotel - shopping, restaurants, the pier, even fisherman's wharf (was a little far). One warning... Mission st between Powell and 7th is really sketch. We had no idea and wandered through once. Would definitely stay at the Rex again and recommend it to anyone. Just remember, it's a simple hotel (no gym, pool, etc.) Just comfortable rooms, great service and prime location.

“Great hotel”

I really enjoyed this unique hotel. It was definitely not a cookie cutter experience and was really interesting. The great location was extremely helpful in seeing San Francisco. The only two things that weren't so great were the beds which could maybe use new mattresses and were pretty bouncy, but not that uncomfortable, and the elevator, which was very slow and old and small.

“Small Irritation”

Enjoyed the hotel location and the staff were friendly and helpful. One small irritation related to the "green" housekeeping option which allowed for you to opt out of the daily housekeeping in return for a $5 coupon which could be used in the hotel. We were at the hotel for 3 days and busy with a conference and unable to utilize the coupons until the end of our stay, Undisclosed was the fact that you had to use the $5 coupon on the day issued or the coupon was void. This is not a money issue but rather one of principle. Management should reconsider their policy and honour all coupons whether they pooled or utilized on a daily basis. At the very least it should be disclosed so by there is no miscommunication.

“Very cheerful and helpful staff”

This is a small, well maintained, hotel with old fashioned decor, which seems appropriate in San Francisco. Centrally located on a cable car route. Very helpful and cheerful staff: let them book your tours (but the Alcatraz tour often books up a week in advance, so do this online before you travel).

I will come back again. Very friendly and efficient staff without seeming obsequious. Good location, quiet room lovely decor. I think it is a good place to work. I thought this when I arrived.

“Delighted with Hotel Rex”

The location of Hotel Rex is great -- close to Union Square and lots of restaurants. The room was pleasant, comfortable and decorated in an "arty / funky" way. The staff were helpful. The rates were very reasonable. I would stay there again as it represented good value for the money.

“Happy at the Rex!”

First time to San Francisco and I wasn't sure where to stay. I couldn't have picked a better hotel or location - the Hotel Rex was excellent. The location was excellent - we were .5 block from the cable cars and major shopping in Union Square. Only a few blocks to walk to the BART. I was with my sister and we felt very safe in the neighborhood - no concerns what-so-ever. As far as the Hotel Rex, the front desk staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. Looked forward to seeing them each morning & evening - such a happy group. The room was small but very clean - we had no issues. You can't go wrong with staying at the Rex!
