“cosy and great location!”
cool little hotel in a great location!! really enjoyed our stay at this arty san fran hotel!! its in a great location and has a really good feel about it... would stay here again for sure!
“Just what you need, without what you don't (plus some very good art!)”
This hotel isn't there for fancy rooms, black tie service, or any of the normal things that make too many hotels sterile. This is a no-frills place that's cheap, and offers just what you need to stay on the cheap without stuff you don't need. The art on the walls & in the rooms keeps it very interesting - I found myself browsing hallways for a while one morning.
“Quirky but cute”
If you require the kinds of lavish excesses to be found at the city's grander hotels then the Hotel des Arts is definitely not for you. However, if you are happy with a small room with minimal trappings, and have a whimsical sense of humour then this place has a price - location combination that is hard to beat. As one toils up Bush Street from Market Street, the entrance is easily missed as it is nothing more than a narrow door. The neighboring store has a more commanding frontage. The lobby is actually on the second floor, which requires one to take one of the oldest working elevators still in existence - the kind with the grating that you pull across, which can present a bit of a challenge with one's luggage. It is not a modern convenience; but it is quaint, which sets the stage for the rest of the hotel. All of the walls are adorned with art (for sale), and one is encouraged to tour the corridors for a private view. The desk staff are nothing if not friendly. My room was quite small, but certainly adequate for my needs; though for two people and a longer stay, the close quarters could pose a problem. The HVAC on a neighboring roof top was disconcertingly loud, but fortunately, at night time, it abated. Nonetheless, there was the traditional San Francisco early morning chorus of garbage collection. Oh, I omitted to mention the shared bath that comes with the sporting price. Not for everyone the dart down the corridor but I met with no awkward encounters. A win for me.
“Awesome stay for 2 College Kids”
As a Bay area resident visiting the city, I know the area pretty well. This place is in an awesome and safe spot right downtown. The art is really cool and it's exciting to not know which room you'll end up in. Noise (even on New Years Eve!) wasn't too bad. You could certainly hear it, but it didn't keep us awake. Simple, clean decor. Shared bathrooms are no big deal. Nice flatscreen tv. Bed was comfy enough. Woman at the front desk gave us awesome ideas/directions on where to go for the evening. Decent free breakfast. Free wi-fi. Safe with a security guard at the front door during the night. Sweet neon sign. Can't wait to go back. Recommend to the college student for sure or lone traveler that doesn't mind being surrounded by the college or hipster crowd. It's an awesome, economically friendly find!
“Unique, Great Location”
We will definately use this hotel in the future. Fun place to stay in a great area. Three thumbs up!
“Bed & Breakfast style of hotel but with the cleaness and convenience of a hotel”
Whomever expects the luxury of an Intercontinential or a Marriott with gym and swimming pool, I would not recommend the hotel. BUT if you like original artful locations, you will be served. In addition to a breakfast worth any Comfort Inn or Microtel, you will appreciate the cleanness of the location and the rooms. The Must of this hotel is the style: when entering the premises which looks like any apartment building from outside, you will appreciate all the paintings on the walls (modern type) and in the rooms, the old fashioned small bathroom, the wallpaper being unbelievable art creation. You will pay for a very decent price the equivalent of a small suite: one side with the fridge, the modern sink and a couch with a flat screen, and your bedroom including a king bed (futon), a large flat screen and a table. Internet is free and available. When entering the room, I had the joy of breathing soap. As for the location, nothing better since you are accross from Chinatown entrance gate, 15 min walk from Pier 39 and the area is surrounded by all sorts of restaurants and bistros. I strongly recommend it.
“Great hotel with character!”
My family and I stayed at this Arty hotel in a great location across the street from the Main Gate to China Town. the staff were great and the rooms with the art on the walls was a nice treat!!! Will always stay here when we are in San Francisco!!!!
“Unique Experience”
Very nice experience. friendly staff, was quiet when I went. stayed in room Jet Martinez Room 208. very nice. even accidently left my windows open all day and nothing was missing from room. there is no air conditioning, but October was ok month without it and with windows open all night. right by chinatown gate. the irish pub's cider next door is great!
“I loved the hotel.”
The hotel is charming and the location is perfect.
“What a cool place to stay”
If you want luxury and high class decor - this isnt for you - if you want clean, trendy and unique budget accomodation in down town San Fran then it is! Recomend this highly!
