“Conveniently located! Close to downtown and close to the outlets!”

The Best Western Gateway Hotel is truly a gateway to everything San Diego. The staff were so very helpful. We felt like we were part of the family.

“New, Nice, Clean, Convenient, Friendly, Free Parking, Free Use of Computers”

If you have a car, this is a good value with its free parking. It is conveniently located right off I-5, about 7 minutes south of downtown San Diego. I liked the neighborhood. The hot tub was good as was the swimming pool. I liked the landscaping with the palm trees. Its "Business Center" near the lobby always had a free computer that anyone could use to check their email, the weather, or local attractions. I stayed there for a week on vacation and had nothing but good experiences.

Getting around

If you have car and are touring, I recommend visiting the waterfront sights on a weekend because you can park on the street all day for less than $7 with the meters, and for free on Sundays. Another option is to park for free in Balboa Park and catch the "Old Town Trolley" bus that takes you for a two-hour tour of the city if you don't get off. It is a hop-on-hop-off option, so you could spend the whole day just doing that. As for the metro light rail "Trolley" that has six cars per train, I rode that one day and had a big problem just getting on board during rush hour. Around 4:30 p.m., about 16 people and myself on the platform were unable to get aboard because it was so crowded. Fortunately, the next train had plenty of room, but that was before it entered downtown. Then it was near impossible. Although you can buy an all-day pass for just $5, I do not recommend it. Leave it for the locals and save yourself much time and aggravation.

“Hidden Gem”

Best Western Marina Gateway Hotel looks to be fairly new. The room was in great condition, bed was comfy, indoor corridor access to rooms, maid service and maintenance is available 24 hours, a friendly staff, close to major attractions and easy access to I-5. The only problem I had with the hotel was there aren't any convenience stores nearby.

Area recommendations

Downtown - because it's close to transportation, shopping and attractions Mission Valley - major shopping area, but traffic is horrible. La Jolla - scenic and upper class neighborhood full of great places to eat Julian, CA - charming old mining town famous for apple pies. Coronado Island - lots of restaurants, bars and shopping. Chula Vista - affordable, decent hotels within 15 minutes of San Diego Zoo, Seaworld and other attractions.

“A Brand New Hotel”

This Best Western Hotel is brand new and is only a short 10 minute drive from most downtown attractions. Located right off interstate 5(less than a street block), it is actually very quiet and convenient to motorists.

“BW Plus Marina Gateway”

Great hotel - I've already stayed here on 2 different occasions (4th floor - sacrificed the availability of the wireless internet but ethernet cable works); helpful and friendly staff. Hotel has a Keurig coffee brewer with several coffee selections - I suggested that a mocha or hot chocolate be added to the selection (Oct 2011 - see if this appear).

Sea World, San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Seaport Village, Waterfront, Imperial Beach, Coronado. The outlet mall just north of the border have lots of great deals.

“Nice place, reasonably priced”

We liked this hotel a lot. The only complaint I had is that I requested a room that I wouldn't have to walk far to get to because I am disabled, and they didn't save me a room where I wouldn't have to walk far. The hotel was clean, and the staff was very nice.

“No views and train tracks”

Very clean and comfortable room BUT it's in an old indurstrial area next to the train tracks and swithout yard. There are absolutely no views. If you're just looking for a nice clean room this is the place but it's a 15-20 drive to anywhere.

Anywhere near the downtown Convention Center on Harbour Blvd. This are is close to everything and within walking distance of Seaport Village and the Gaslight district.
