“Good place to stay”
We loved it at the hotel, the breakfast in the morning alongside the small stream is the best way to start your day. Although, it can be a little difficult to find, it was well worth it! When we return later this year, we will stay at the same place.
“Hotel Occidental El Tucano & Spa, the place to stay in Costa Rica!”
Excellent location; next to the River and Hot Spring waters. Friendly Staff and great Spa
“Wonderful service!!!”
This was our first trip to Costa Rica and we wanted an adventure. El Tucano is off the beaten path, but the staff is very accomdating and friendly. There were not any amenities in the room, not even a clock. But the room was very comfortable. The grounds were well kept and absolutely gorgeous. The balcony to eat on that overlooked the stream was relaxing and romantic. Frank the tour guide is a great asset to the hotel and befriends you immediately. One thing to note, in this area of Costa Rica, there are not many english speaking people, so bring the translation dictionary! The town next door has a market where we picked up snacks and beverages to save some $$$.
“Relaxing and pretty.”
Past the guardpost, El Tucano's wide, palm lined entrance road opens up to a generous parking lot flanked by pastel buildings. Think 50's bungalows, less the pink flamingos. The desk help was pleasant, but did not offer to take our luggage, a distinct snub considering the price of the room. Buffet breakfast is included, and sumptuous: meats, eggs (scrambled or fried), pancakes, muffins, french toast, cereal, milk, two juices, a mountain of fresh fruit. Daylight pours into the cavernous dining room, and french doors lead out to a tropical forested cliff, and a rushing brook below. Blue and yellow butterflies flit past. Tablecloths and nice settings complete the dream. Our room was large with two king size beds, a desk and wardrobe with safe, and a jumbo shower with lots of fluffy white towels. The pool is one of the best in CR, practically olympic sized, cool and refreshing. The Spa is separated by sex where clothing is optional, and treatments are private. Unfortunately, the massage therapist I was traveling with was dissapointed with the massage he received.
“Hill Climbing Hotel”
This hotel was difficulate to find{not at town on itinerary list}. The actually name of the hotel was different than what we were told. This is not a handicapp friendly hotel. You have to go up steps to go anywhere. The resturant and pools were down a big hill. Very big hill. The hot springs pools were the best feature. You could walk around the grounds and see so many birds. We lost electricity about 10 pm and the place was very dark. No back up gererator and no one offered a flashlight to help us in our room. The electric came back on about 1 am. and then went off again. This was very scary.
“Too far from Arenal”
Even though this hotel is listed as being close to the Arenal volcano, its actually a good 45 minutes away on windy and confusing roads! Its not easy to get to as the hotel does not have up any signage and trying to reach it at night can be treacherous. Its a good hotel if you're not looking to use it as staging point for travelling but if I was told I would be so far from everything (ie; Arenal, La Fortuna, Monteverde etc...) when I booked it I would have never stayed there. In addition, the hotel is not close to any good restaurants so unless you want to eat in the hotel every night, good luck.
