“Will not return”

I was not expecting much from a budget hotel, but this was not good. The bathroom sink was largely blocked and not clean, the toilet seat was cracked, and the blankets threadbare, with no heating even though the temperature was low. Security was poor. We booked in advance to stay there four nights then two nights with a break in between of one night. If we had not booked beforehand we would not have gone back. There were four reception staff working individually and three were helpful, but not the fourth who spoke no English. On each stay we paid the night before leaving to get our passports back and clear the formalities with an English speaking receptionist. In each case the next morning on checking out the unhelpful receptionist insisted we had not paid until the receipt was put right in front of him. First time he said it was not in the diary, the second time I made sure it was in the diary and he refused to look there. The second stay this check out procedure was made even worse by the receptionist abandoning the desk before 08.30 and not returning until I had leant on the door bell for at least ten minutes, and this was after my wife had been around all the building trying to find somewhere we could leave the key and TV remote (none of the other hotels in the building would accept it). At the time we wanted to catch the bus to the airport so were nervous about the passage of time. One English channel on the TV would have been nice.
