great location - fair hotel

Posted 23-Jan-2015
Pros: location
Cons: have a small refrigerator in the room.
Location: right in the 'heart' of the action - on 'the avenue' (5th) - lots of restaurants/bars in the area - also convenient to the beach.
i was there for 9 nights - the first night i was placed in a building across the street - horrible room! - noisy (windows were not a tight fit), sewer smell in the bathroom & the wooden 'blinds' on the windows could not be adjusted - no 'natural light' could get into the room - electric lights only source of light. i requested a different room & was given one in the 'main section' - quite nice - balcony overlooking the pool/gardens - if one could be guaranteed a similar room, i would recommend the hotel - but not certain one can do that.

Not worth any upgrades

Posted 19-Jan-2015
Pros: location is pretty good overall.
Cons: the service, the buffet is horrible, better bar tenders that know how to make cocktails.
Location: the location is pretty good. in the center of Playa del Carmen, walking distance from anywhere you might be interested in going.
We upgraded to the delux option. When we arrived they said that they're having a problem with the building and moved us to Nina hotel few blocks over (a hotel that belongs to Tucan as well). as a compensation they gave us the all inclusive package. It gives you access to their buffet. Which is really low grade (all you can eat) food, and poorly made cocktails, that can be drank only in the restaurant. You cannot get drinks from the other bars that you might actually want to seat in. Most of the hotel staff are not very serious and don't give accommodating service. Very disappointing. It seems like they overbook guests as "delux" and just regularly try to convert them to this all inclusive deal.

Nice location that's about it!

Posted 13-Jan-2015
It's an old hotel that needs lots of work. There is no hot water in the bathroom, there is no chair to seat in the room. they have a jacuzzi that the water temperature it's freezing cold as well as the pool, maybe in the summer this will be ok but not in January. I know this is playa del carmen, Mexico but the weather at this time of the year is a bit cold. I won't go back, I have visited Playa del Carmen many times and stayed in other hotels about the same price and really never complain at all, because it's always being great, but not at the Tukan.definitely I won't use it again.

Mexican charm in the heart of the action

Posted 30-Dec-2014
Pros: Mexican charm, authentic & good deal for the great location
Cons: Reception staff to honour what was booked instead of trying to make some money by selling a meal package or uprgading your room !
Location: Awesome location, on the 5th avenue, in the heart of it all & 5 mins walking to the beach
Overall good, but some problems at check in with Expedia reservation...reception staff were insiting on selling us an upgrade of a room or a meal plan. They did not want to honour what we had booked with Expedia at first saying that rooms with balcony or patio were only available with Deluxe rooms and not with std rooms..We had proof on paper that said otherwise. So after some discussion with them , seeing some rooms and lots of time wasted ...the room we were supposed to have & booked (which was a std with balcon or patio) suddenly became available ! ... so once we were finally in that room everything went fine. Another important point to mention; their beach club (Kool) is not included with a reservation of a room ; you have to buy a package in extra that is very expensive in order to go there. So we just went to Mamitas beach club (next to Kool) much cheaper & very cool too ! ;-)

We enjoyed our stay. The staff was courteous , and helpful. We had all inclusive at two restourants and three bars. No complaints . Great value
