I stayed May 5 - 10, 2015. The staff is great. The hotel property is exactly as shown in the photos. It is located very close to many restaurants and shops.
The hotel is quiet on weeknights, but it is VERY LOUD Friday and Saturday night due to a nightclub 2 doors down. The noise didn't bother me since I am a heavy sleeper, but when I woke up at 5 am to go for a run, the party was still going on so this could be a problem for many.
The other problem is the beach. There is a seaweed problem and this portion of the beach is not maintained. The waves are literally black with rotting seaweed. You wouldn't dare go in the water and the smell is terrible. I walked 10 minutes north down the beach every day to find areas where the hotels clear the seaweed and the water is clear.

This hotel grows on you. Our first day was rough: the welcome process was confusing and they try to rope you into sitting through an hour sales pitch the next day. We agreed to it for the $100 resort credit. The sales pitch wasn't bad even though we didn't buy into the program. After getting through the first day, we really enjoyed our stay. We visited in May which is a low tourist season so we never had to wait at the restaurants and could always get a good spot on the beach. This is a small resort so it didn't take more than 10 minutes to walk anywhere. Non-notarized water sports are included which is a very worthwhile amenity! The staff were very friendly and accommodating, but didn't seem very well-trained.
While the staff, location, and facilities of the resort are excellent, there were several problems with disorganization and lack of information. Everything got sorted out eventually, but when we arrived we had only one room booked, not two, despite having booked two through Expedia. This was due to miscommunication and the resort worked out the problem relatively quickly.
After that, there was just several times that information such as available resources, locations, and times were difficult to establish.
This resort is definitely worth going to, but be prepared to ask a lot of questions to figure out what you want to do and what is in included between the regular resort area, their other property nearby, and the adults only section.
As a final note, the swimming with sea turtles and denote tour was incredible!
What a wonderful staff, beautiful location and relaxing vacation. Very zen-like. Excellent restaurants and beautifully creative food.
The hotel itself is just beautiful and the rooms are so spacious with lots of luxury! Treat yourself with a trip to Grand Velas!
The hotel is well-situated in a safe neighborhood. The hotel is spotlessly clean. The staff is friendly, helpful, and responsive to client needs. The breakfast (which is included in the rate) is delightful! During our four-day stay there, we enjoyed generous portions of fresh fruits, re-fried beans, sautéed vegetables, freshly-baked corn breads, coffee and tea. They also provided eggs, meat dishes and yogurt, etc. for those who wanted them. EverythIng was fresh, clean, and first-rate. If we return to Playa del Carmen, w
e will definitely try to stay there!
Still small enough to explore on foot, Playa del Carmen has a relaxed, yet cosmopolitan feel, with a variety of hotels, shops, and restaurants ranging from causal to upscale. European-style sunbathing is common on beaches. Playa is a popular jumping-off point for day trips to Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Tulum, and other peninsula attractions, and a passenger ferry makes frequent runs to Cozumel.
