“Versailles”

This os a great hotel. The service was phenomenal and the facilities were outstanding. We had the best breakfast we have ever had in traveling in Europe for 40 years. We will return.

Area recommendations
Stay here. It is excellent.
Getting around
The hotel is right next to an open pedestrian entry to the palace gardens, on the way to Marie Antoinette's "farm". It is an easy walk, maybe a couple of miles along a shaded Chestnut-covered paved country lane. Entry was free, and you can visit all the gardens from here.

“Great Location, Beautiful Hotel, but....”

This hotel is gorgeous, with great convenient access to Versailles. As another reviewer noted, the breakfast buffet is also recommended. The only issue I would note, is that all Classic Guest Rooms are located in another building that is separate from the main hotel building that largely serves as a conference centre. This other building ("the Pavilion") lacks the character and ambiance of the main hotel building, and although the classic rooms themselves are beautifully furnished and decorated, the building is quite utilitarian and not very . Customers should note that there are no pictures of this other building or the distance from the main hotel on the Expedia (or hotel) website, although there is now a small sentence in the room description ("Located in the Pavilion Building") to identify that the room is located elsewhere -- but frankly, I don't think this fully explains the difference from the hotel pictures that are presented. Customers who are aware of this discrepancy will avoid the disappointment that we experienced when we arrived and learned that we were not in the main building. Otherwise, this htoel is a great place to experience the opulence of Versailles.

“Absolute Perfection”

Absolute perfection. Beginning at the staff making me feel welcome and at home, at all hours. The Palace in Versailles has such a beautiful atmosphere, seamless reception through to the restaurant (Terrace/Veranda?), the fresh country air and grace of the gardens and sunshine, and concierge. This quick trip for my day in Paris was set for perfection from the very beginning. And, yes, I had three or so hours of train rides and luggage problems that meant I arrived after ten at night. But when you're not het up about problems (some people need a good dose of Epsom Salts), and think only of your holiday, you, like me, will be smiling all the way to Paris. I ate at the restaurant, they were open until very late (past 11pm) and it was exquisite. I felt such an honour to be part of the ambience. In the morning, I took tea on the terrace and just adored every minute. Even the butlers were hilarious. Six stars from the happy lady on the train.

When to go
Late April to May.
Getting there
Rail Journey from CDG Airport to Palace Versailles. From CDG-Roissy Airport find RER B and take it to Notre Dame St Michel (middle of Paris). Around forty mins. Under nine Euros. Forty to Fifty minutes. From NDSM find the RER C and take it to the final stop Versailles-Rive Gauche. The train will be labelled VICK. Under four Euros. Forty minutes. After exiting the ticket machines, take the left exit. There is a taxi rank just there. Dial a cab if necessary, or hail. Ask to be taken to the Palace Hotel. They don't know what Waldorf Astoria means. Under ten Euros. Five minutes. I have put the prices and duration of travel as a guide, so you know if you've gone the wrong way or chosen the wrong stop. Note: Do NOT get out at Rive Cauche or Viroflay Rive Gauche. It's a long taxi ride. Just wait until you see that the train would not possibly go through a building. Avoid taking unmetered taxis without confirming a price beforehand. They usually charge Fifty Euros for the hour.
Getting around
Staying in Versailles is perfect if you have a hire car, as it's not far from the city. Moreover, if driving is not possible (like, you forgot your license!), then the RER C gets you to Paris city in around forty minutes.
What to pack
Summer dress (one for every day), flats, sun hat, sunglasses, evening dress, bikini/swimsuit for the pool, walking shoes if you decide to walk to the Trianon, shawl for the sun or the breeze. Also, cotton buds and cotton balls, because they don't provide these at the hotel. And it's a pain to ruin your mood over a few cents of hygiene. Ipod with classy music, because they have players in the rooms.
Must see
Versailles. Grand et Petit Trianon/Marie Antoinette's Hamlet, because the air is perfumed with blossoms and is divine in the sun. Paris only when the sun shines and you're dressed well.
Shopping
RAG - Vintage clothing shop in 1er arr. Barbara Bui - designer label laden Avenue Montaigne. Sephora - Cosmetics, get there for the Coyote Hour on Champs Elysees if you need cheering up.
Dining
Don't go to the most modern looking cafes. They will be more expensive with the worst food. Listen for French speakers. That is my guide when in doubt. Also, back streets and dark windows... They are to hide from foreigners... So, I won't spill mine here...

“The Trip of a lifetime”

I was traveling to Versailles alone, although I had been to Paris 4 times. I wanted to practice my French. My first day I walked around the city of Versailles window shopping and visiting the delicious farmer's market. Versailles is an easy city to negotiate and the assistance from my hotel was invaluable. Day 2 I walked to the Palace and took the train around the gardens and Grand Trianon and Petite Trianon. I walked through 3 of the Gardens. Day 3 I took the train to see Chartres Cathedral - I took the tour by Malcolm Miller which was wonderful--I had lunch at a local excellent creperie That night I attended a new French Film at one of the local cinemas in Versailles. Day 4 I took the train into Paris to tour the Centre de Pompideau and have dinner at Deux Magot.--it is always a study in civility. Day 5, I went back to Paris to tour the wonderful Musee Nissim de Carmondo--this musuem is fabulous and prepared me to visit the Palace the next day. My final day I toured the Palace, visiting all the exhibits. I had a fabulous late lunch at Potager de Roy, recommended by Patricia Wells, I walked back to the Palace and took a golf cart tour to the Hamet. Great Trip, Fabulous Meals and Hotel, wonderful weather and walking 6 miles daily. I was so glad I chose making Versailles the centerpiece of my trip.

Area recommendations
I stayed near the grounds of the Palace and was able to walk in the Palace Gardens at the Entrance to Neptunes Fountain in the late afternoon, then walk to one of the many places nearbye for dinner.
What to pack
I watched the weather and planned my trip for cold weather. I was correct, it was 20 degrees cooler than normal late October Temperatures. I took cashere sweaters instead which I could layer over lightweight turtlenecks. I leather jacket, a trench coat. walking shoes( but I also took sneakers for bad weather. I took black slacks, grey cords and dark trouser jeans. I took a jersey weight dress that I could also layer. A pashmina topped it off. I wore everything. It was perfect.

“Best Place in Versailles”

Alot of history there and a few minutes walk to the Palace. Make sure you book withthe "breakfast option", worth the price. There is a real nice restraunt there that is world known, we could not get a reservation. You can walk to town and hit a Bistro for, (Bistro du Buchero) was excellent. We were able to buy tickets close by as well to the three different palaces within walking distance (wear your walking shoes though alot to see). We went in late August and it was not too busy b/c school had started. Overall, if we went back to Versailles I would stay there again (also if your a Hilton point member, you get those as well !)

“Loved it!”

We drove in through the amazing gate and our eyes popped open. After our long drive, it was more lovely than we pictured. We stayed in the new part of the hotel and were thrilled with our room. The room was large and comfortable. The beds were extremely comfortable. The hotel was beautiful. We wished we had asked about a room in the old, historic part of the hotel, but we were completely satisfied with our room. We just wonder what the rooms in that part looked like. Staff was wonderful especially at reception. We were greeted with professionalism and warmth. She came out to give us a mini-tour of the hotel. This was very appreciated. Buffet breakfast was included in our booking rate and it was a wonderful assortment of food. The waiter recommended a blend of orange juice and the berry juice. It was heavenly! The closeness to the main entrance of the Palace of Versailles was great. Less than a twenty minute walk had us to the gate and in line to see the palace.

“I will NEVER stay at this hotel again or recommend it to anyone!”

This was one of the worse experiences of my life. I was looking forward to staying at this hotel due to the reputation of Hilton and Waldorf hotels...disappointed, frustrated, overall terrible experience.

It is an excellent hotel and has great facilities. The people are nice and rooms are clean and well decorated. The only drawback I have is its location - it is a bit far from the nearby train station.
