Noisy but good
Only issue is noise at night. Although expected worst than normal. Convenient location to walk into centre and good bus service.

Not the most comfortable room, no chair and the beds very firm but the room was clean and in good décor. room has a kettle and a small fridge and met all our needs for the short stay. The inn was very close to the town centre and five minutes to walk. We would stay there again if we return to Oxford shopping.

Nice but way to noisy
The hotel is really well placed, with free parking on site. The room (n°5) on the second floor was spacious, cute and clean. But, the noise during the night was unbearable, we could not sleep for the 2 nights we stayed in. So if you come to Oxford to party that's perfect, but if you want to visit and sleep at night, avoid it.

Terrible mattress
The bed was incredibly uncomfortable, I could feel the metal from the mattress protruding through and only managed to sleep when I slept on half my duvet and wrapped myself in the other half. If there had been two of us this would have been difficult. Never come across such a bad mattress. But the staff were kind and the room was clean.

Location was superb. Parking facilities great. Large flat screen TV which was good. Main grouse was the hot shower. Miserable trickle. Takes a good 30 mins to wash my hair. Temp fluctuates between cold as ice and boiling hot with very little in between. It’s a pub so nothing much of customer service to speak of

It was very basic, the toilet was full of brown water and the bathroom smelt of sewage initially until we run the tap for a few minutes. The room was basic, the initial welcome/greeting was poor but the breakfast and breakfast staff were excellent. Ideal location for Oxford.

too expensive for its quality
luckily we only need to stay one night here: very small room and low roof; very noisy till the late night (room is on the high traffic street); shower with very low pressure and flow rate, no hot water; breakfast just passable. In total, too expensive for its quality.

Our stay in Oxford
The location was excellent being a short walk into Oxford, with a choice of amazing restaurants around the corner on Cowley Road. The traffic noise at night was very loud but we expected that. The room had been recently refurbished and was clean and comfortable. The dining room was gloomy and the breakfast was passable.

Good price and location. Sad bit is they redid pub and lost all world look. No real ales. I’ve stayed before and miss the pub. Two good pubs near by. Great full English breakfast but only available for 1 hr 7:30-8:30

Quirky but great place to stay in Oxford.
Great location with parking, breakfasts were really good. Room was quirky but comfortable and as its an 18th century coaching inn to be expected. One niggle water pressure was not great for shower.

You get what you pay for
The hotel is recently refurbished, but clearly on a budget. It is an old building with the ground floor being an old and also refurbished pub. Th bathroom in room 4 was new, but the plumbing looked a little circumspect. The shower was either boiling hot or freezing cold. The new thermostat was suspect. That apart the room which contained a king size and single beds was nicely decorated and furnished. The hotel is inexpensive, and I would stay there again. My wife would not.

The Old Black Horse is getting a young facelift
Although the renovation work is being undertaken at this moment in time we were not disturbed by it. A hearty welcome greeted us, and our room (already renovated) was perfect for the three nights of our stay. Although facing the busy main road we were relatively undisturbed by traffic and pedestrian late night chit chat; although over the busy main bar we heard nothing from below at all. The breakfast was more than adequate, with polite and quick service, and fairly decent food. The main reason for our choosing The Old Black Horse was its proximity to the Oxford town centre, and the provision of parking. Both were big pluses towards our stay. We also like the more quirky Cowley Road which we have visited in the past; again it was just around the corner...literally. To summarise: good location, pleasant staff, refurbished room. Thank you to all concerned.

The room was dark, dingy, and depressing, the only disappointing room on our three week journey yet the most expensive. The shower head kept falling off the wall, and the carpet was old and dingy. Breakfast was good, and the staff were accommodating.

Don’t bother, needs updating urgently
Old tired pub letting out rooms. Enter through public bar no reception. Men, dogs, Tv, loud music etc nothing inviting. Barmaid couldn’t find key. Room clean, no top sheets on bed, unironed old duvet cover, double bed not even a duvet! A bedspread type thing and no sheet. Breakfast awful staff refused initially as 8.30am finish we were there just before but no staff she was washing up I had to go to kitchen. Scrambled egg toast not even buttered. Not offered toast jam etc tiny tea for 2. Awful we just left.

A character property but not suitable for disabled
I am disabled and booked a ground floor room which turned out to be up 2 flights of stairs, the stairs were also quite narrow, staff were keen to help, but clearly had I known I would not have chosen this hotel - however we slept well in comfortable beds and toilet facilities were fine, also was not disturbed by noise from the pub

Next to main road quite noisy.
Problems with room shower not working, television also. Was eventually moved to another room. Staff were helpful but obviously a lack of checks being made before hand. Breakfast very good. Whilst I paid for my stay at the time I checked in as per the booking conferment ion, a pre authorisation for the same amount had been sent to my bank two days before my arrival date. This has as yet not been removed.

Check the reviews !!
Inn was very dated and not at a standard that I have been used to by using hotels.com. Room was very small, bed was a type that had just springs for support and every time you moved it made a noise so not good for sleeping. Bathroom was small and covered in plastic glitter panels. There was sky sports on the TV in every part of the inn, even in the breakfast room there was a TV in the window pointing outside !!. Breakfast was only served between 7:30 and 8:30 again pretty poor although the breakfast itself was OK. Location was about the only good thing as it was a 10 minute walk from the town. I was disappointed in the price of £130+ as the previous week I had stayed in Aberdeen in a Mc Donald's hotel for less than £100 and it was outstanding.

Clean, no frills & friendly near central Oxford
A no frills but decent hotel. 'Olde worlde' coaching inn building not a modern clone hotel. We booked 2 rooms, both were clean & tidy. The staff were very polite, friendly & helpful. The mattress on one bed had seen better days & that bed was pretty squeaky, but my back didn't suffer & my daughter had no problems in the other room at all. We didn't hear any other guests, although there were quite a few. The bar was quiet in the evening and the sole drinker had left before we got back from walking into the city centre for food. I had a quiet pleasant beer at one of the beer garden tables out the front when we got back. There was some road noise overnight, but we'd had to leave the windows open as the weather was so hot. Breakfast was good. The staff were happy for me to leave the car in the car park for the day that we checked out, which was ideal as we'd driven up the evening before, to spend the day wandering around the colleges. We will happily stay there again.

Great location, the hotel is a bit quirky, wonky floors and the like, but it is an old old building, I’d stay again. The WiFi worked well, we were on the top for, but we don’t go there to sit in the room.

This place is not a real hotel but rather a small guest house. I came late and there was noone to meet me, so I had to call their phone and ask for help. There was noone at the check out, either! The good side was a really good English breakfast, though it was never clear when it is served.

Disappointing
I was thoroughly disappointed with this hotel - it was nothing like the reviews posted on the website. Due to a problem with the ground floor room booked we were moved to a top floor room which was extremely small, half the lights didn't work and the bed creaked every time you moved on it. There was no chair to use to watch the TV so when you were in the room you had to sit on the bed! The floorboards were extremely unlevel. The staff do not take you in and show you the room on arrival - we were taken part way and told 'that's your room there'. If it hadn't been for the fact that the booking was non refundable, we would have left and asked for our money back!

City Centre Location
Character pub on the edge of the city centre. Great location with some parking available to the rear of the pub. Staff friendly and helpful. Good English breakfast. Before coming, I was concerned when reviewing photos of the accommodation regarding the potential condition and noise from the pub below. Whilst some of the interior of the pub is definitely in need of renovation, the bedroom I was staying (Room 5) was excellent. It was also on the second floor, so wasn't affected by noise from the pub below, although noise from the busy road is evident. I stayed one night and it served me well.
