“What I expected”
Hotel was a little further from center of town than I originally thought, but it's right on major buslines, and they ran frequently.
“Rough and ready but OK”
The first impression of Nanford Guesthouse wasn’t great. It looked slightly forbidding from the outside, not to mention a bit rough and ready – an impression that continues inside. The welcome could hardly be described as ‘warm’ – ‘disinterested’ is more like it – but the checking-in process was very fluid and professional. The rooms are nothing special – once again, a bit rough, with wrinkled carpets and warped bathroom floors, and even a cracked window in one room that I stayed in. But these are slightly petty gripes because the room was clean and everything that should have been there was present and correct: a comfy bed, decent towels, hot running water, TV, kettle, and even a fridge. And however poor the first impression, the guesthouse redeemed itself at breakfast with a wonderful spread on the side, and a generous and well-cooked full English breakfast. All in all, I would say that the Nanford guesthouse is worth a stay – I’ve stayed there a few times now and, after all, you get what you pay for. The guesthouse’s claim to be 5 minutes from the university needs to be treated with caution, however. Whilst it is true that after 5 minutes’ walking you will reach university-owned buildings, it takes a little longer to reach the core of the university – you need to allow 20 minutes or so to reach the Bodleian, for example.
“Short stay”
A good and affordable option for single travellers, excellent breakfast served, though a slight downside might be the lack of a lift. Very friendly and helpful staff. I would recommend it.
“Dreadful entrance areas, pleasant room”
This is a very odd place. I stayed for one night, and had read mixed reviews before going, so was prepared for the worst. The reception office is a tip, and the staff are not exactly effusive - they are not rude, just not terrifically welcoming. The condition of the main corridors is appalling, it stinks of stale smoke, the carpets are threadbare and the decor is not just tired, but actually falling over. However, once in my room, I was pleasantly surprised. I paid for a single, but got a spacious double. It had been recently decorated, was clean, with fresh bedding and towels, and plenty of them. The bathroom was clean, if not modern, and there were perfectly adequate tea-making facilities. I could not get the TV to show a picture, but I think that was just me. The room was warm and quiet. I did not stay for breakfast, so cannot comment. Basically, if you shut your eyes on the way in, the room itself was fine. If they spent a couple of thousand doing up the corridors, it would seem basic, but fine. If you're staying one or two nights only and can put up with the weirdness outside, you should get a decent night's sleep at a decent price.
“Depends!!!”
For one night you can stay there. NO MORE then that! All the things are VERY OLD! Thre is a good Wi-Fi, but the person from the reception forgot to tell the password and I had to run several times from my place to the reception (if you can call that THING by the word "reception"). BUT, the location is exelent.
“Nice”
Cheap and cheerful Oxford getaway located a minute's walk from the busy Cowley area and 15 minutes from the city centre. Very good service.
“Pas terrible”
Mauvaise odeur, pas d'eau chaude pour prendre une douche, etc Par contre, très bien placé, 10 à pied du centre
“First impressions can be deceptive”
The Nanford could do alot by improving the first impressions on arrival. When we arrived the car park looked untidy, the office wasn't very clean and the general decor inside and out was shabby. However we had a good nights sleep and enjoyed their english breakfast.
“Not a good value for the money”
Although the staff was very friendly, however the hotel has a nasty smell, very dirty back yard and the quality of the room was below the average.
“one to miss”
An interesting experience, but not one to be repeated.
