“Great self-catering studio apartments”
The self catering additions to the room made a big difference when travelling on a budget. Would definitely recommend to backpackers, students etc. who don't want to pay $100+ for a standard room, or people not wanting to pay "Waikiki prices" at restaurants for every meal. A couple of negatives was there was no wireless and the cleaner only came twice a week. But these were things that were easily ignored.
“Kuhio Banyan Hotel Review.”
Whilst my room was clean and had all that I needed, what was not ideal was the location. At night you could hear music blaring from the bar below on one side and music coming from the bar at the back of the hotel. It is very dated in terms of the building needing a serious renovation (exterior paint job). The staff were very helpful and friendly, recommending affordable places to buy tour packages and where to dine. There is no wifi available in the building but Starbucks across the street provides speedy connection from 5am til 10:30pm which was great to know. It would have been more convenient to have wifi available at the hotel though. Since it was my first time to Hawaii, I was appalled to see how many drug dealers, prostitutes and homeless people were visible from the hotel/nearby streets. It put me off going back to Hawaii-this part of Waikiki is not an ideal place to stay in-there were guys standing opposite Starbucks every night and my friends knew they were dealers (they tried to sell their products to them). Kuhio Avenue is not a well lit street compared to the main street (Kalakaua), so I wouldn't stay in a hotel on that street again. Arguments on the street late at night could be heard from my room which was only muffled when I turned on my air conditioner which made a very loud humming noise. When I made calls I'd turn off the airconditioner cos it was too loud. Overall, the hotel is ok; you get what you pay for, but the location doesn't feel safe.
