“Cute hotel in newcastle”
nice little hotel in newcastle's old town, very close to the riverside and 10min from the Sage Gateshead. Very good location and you can see how this hotel was once very very central - few disadvantages though as the beautiful sash windows are single glazed and not very good at keeping the noise out and the heat in! Also entrance faces a multi-storey car park. However, very nicely renovated, clean and tidy, with wi-fi and friendly staff.
“Excellently placed, very comfortable for the price”
The hotel was more than adequate for a budget hotel and much better placed than I would have realised from the map or other reviews - only a short walk from the shopping centre of the city and surrounded by good places to eat. Excellent value for money and a good sized room - not being a couple we moved the twin beds apart by more than a bed's width and still had room for the sofa and desk. The breakfast room was light and very pleasant and full breakfast very reasonably priced. The only downsides were, first that the street noise was considerable, the windows not being double-glazed and secondly that the round door-knob which had to be turned at the same time as turning the room key was so stiff that at first I was convinced that they had given me the wrong key. If you have weak or arthritic hands you might quite seriously not be able to open the door! And in fact you would also have problems with the bath tap/shower selection mechanism which was unique in my experience and involved crouching in the bath to read the instructions while struggling with a very stiff shiny widget with wet hands and enjoying a brief involuntary cold shower. I would definitely stay here again; the above were small annoyances compared to the convenience, the comfort of the beds and the friendly 24hr reception staff. Taxi from the airport was about GBP16.
“surtees hotel”
Although the hotel was central the lift was broken for my entire stay which was difficult when you have to go up 9 flights of stairs. There were no phones to call reception on so you had to go down to the desk every time. Not all the tv channels worked so if you like BBC channel you will he sorely disappointed. The shower was also broken so the only option was a bath. Overall for the price the hotel was not too bad and its highlight was its location, however the little touches missed let it down.
