“Recommened, but w/ a warning.”
Super clean & very helpfull staff. Loved the location. The food & shopping in the area is great! The only negative is that acoustics are extremely bad! I could here someone actually open up a candy wrapper and actually chew the candy or chips. I herd someone fart, someone coming & leaving the floor. Other then that, i recommened.
“Perfect for 'no frills' short stay”
This hotels is totally no frills; no telephone or tv in room. Room is tiny but feels cozy rather than claustrophobic. Bed very comfortable. Nice towels. Shared bath; all scrupulously clean. Only complaint: lounge/public space is too noisy, with tv and/or music going. I would have preferred a quiet place to sit and read. Staff very friendly. Single room was perfect for a solo traveler for short stay. Do not recommend for family or for long stay as there is no room to store a lot of clothing, etc. Neighborhood has all the pluses and minuses of area in midst of gentrification. Close to subways, museums, galleries, Whole Foods.
“An old-school upscale warehouse experience”
This is a great place for New York on a budget, kind of a boutique hotel meets hostel with a funky old-school vibe in a wonderful location. The staff were a 10 on the friendliness scale, and accommodations were comfortable for what I needed: a cheaper room in a nice Manhattan neighborhood. No, the little rooms don't have ceilings, and yes, some rooms are of the "sharing" variety (re: interesting discussions among roomies); however, the throwback ambiance and the upscale attitude more than made up for any minor noise issues I may have encountered. That being said, I can hardly fault the establishment for the noise when young adults out in the big city for the first time find themselves dealing with international tourists (problems can come up, it's up to those involved to keep it quiet; READ THE SIGNS). While the bathrooms are definitely dorm-style, they wear the same snazzy outfit as the rest of the hotel. I dare anyone to find a nicer communal bathroom at these rates in a metropolis. The Bowery House is not a family place, but I'd recommend it to anyone I know for brief budget-jaunts to the city.
“A real experience”
If you're looking to lounge around in a pool, watch TV in bed, and relax in your hotel room, this is definitely not for you. But then, I find it hard to fathom wanting to do any of those things when you're in the middle of New York City. This hotel is for dropping your stuff off and changing your clothes before you go out to experience all of the amazing things the city has to offer. The hotel itself is beautiful, flawlessly clean and the staff are friendly. The lobby is a comfortable place to take a breather, and the whole place just seems infused with a sense of adventure. All together, I probably spent less than a couple of hours actually IN the hotel and awake, and in that time I met three different, interesting, and very nice people from three different countries. It's only a few blocks from EVERYTHING--including the subway--another advantage of actually being IN the city. The neighborhood itself made me a little nervous at night, but I didn't run into any actual trouble, and in the hotel I felt quite safe and comfortable. It's really affordable, and I will definitely be staying here again the next time I visit New York City.
“Too loud”
Clean, safe and good service. But the room nearby R bar on Bowery St. is too loud.
“Stay cheep in NYC”
Definitely an experience! Good for people with a deep sleep. Very clean bathrooms!
“tiny rooms but who needs more?”
the staff was amazing so nice and helpful, the room is TINY and there are some noises at night but very cosy and comfortable, except for the showers that were on another floor and was pretty awkward to walk down with a towel every time.. there were no computers, and the wifi didnt work sometimes =\
“Great location”
Really nice clean hotel cabins are tiny a bed a small chest of draws and a hook are all that is the room no mirror in the room walls are thin and the roof of he room seems to be some kind of garden fencing which means you can hear everything your neighbour is doing. Shared bathrooms are really nice and clean great roof top garden and free wi-fi if you are just looking for a place to sleep this is a great place to stay!
“Hurricane safe-house”
I have to admit that when I arrived I was worried about the area and the fact that there weren't many people around, but that had a lot to do with the hurricane that was approaching. Considering the situation and the 30-something guests waiting in the common room for their beds to be ready at 11am, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. One of the staff even lent her own umbrella to a guest who needed to go outside for a while and they kept us all updated about which supermarkets were still open so we could get supplies for the next couple of days in case the power went out. They also made an effort to keep us entertained when we were stuck inside for 2 days, keeping us chatting and positive about what was going on. In terms of the hostel, it was great. The bathroom was modern and clean and the dorm I stayed in had comfortable beds and was roomy enough to be able to put my stuff down in my own area. The only problem I'd say would be the noise. It was really difficult to sleep at night, not because of the area, but because of the other hostel guests. Despite this though, I'd definitely recommend Bowery House - good value for money.
“Cool, clean, convenient, but VERY noisy.”
The location was hip and convenient. The staff was top-notch. The rooms were very, very small and bathrooms were shared bathrooms. Rooftop party goers made lots of noise while going up and down the stairs and going back and forth to the bathrooms near my room. It's a very fun and cool place but I was hardly able to sleep there. This is a place for those seeking adventure at the expense of comfort.
