“small but perfectly formed!”
great hotel, very design conscious and clean. Room are pretty small but this is typical of NY hotels. they have done well to maximise the space but there is very little storage. bed comfortable and nice big LCD TV and big shower. we didn't have a view of any kind and just faced a brick wall, i think some of the rooms would have overlooked the street though, which is not necessarily as good thing as NY is a noisy city! rooms had heating/aircon which was very effective, a coffee machine, small ironing board and iron, good hairdryer and bath robes. all in all a lot of attention to detail has been paid, there is even a small gym in the basement. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we enjoyed our stay. there's not too much in the immediate surrounding area in terms of bars and restaurants but we didn't really want all that right outside our door....it's only a few minutes walk to where they all are and about 5-10 minutes walk to the buzzing meatpacking district. it's a minute away from 23rd street subway station which has a direct line to jamaica station where you connect for the airtrain to JFK....much cheaper and easier than a cab. would recommend to anyone and the rate we paid was very reasonable.
“Nice place to stay”
Very convenient location. Modernized hotel with clean room. Room was certainly small but I have actually seen smaller in NYC! Complimentary WiFi worked with no problems although it did log itself off after a certain number of hours and had to log back in.
“Easy to enjoy Chelsea hotel”
Clean, well-run and well-located, the GEM in Chelsea is one of the best deals in Manhattan. Its lower-midtown location is within a few blocks walk of numerous subway stops, and a reasonable walking distance from the Penn Station/Garden area, all of Chelsea, the West Village and the revitalized Meatpacking District. Rooms are compact, but there are much smaller rooms in NYC for far more money. Decor is IKEA chic (white melamine) but the bed is comfy, the bathroom is stylish and functional, the room and hallways are clean, and there's free WiFi everywhere (though you have to log in over and over, even if your computer just goes to sleep). No parking nearby, so if you're driving in, it's hard even to find a place to unload your bags for three minutes, though in theory you can find street parking on 22nd or 23rd. Friendly and helpful staff.
“great location”
great location, friendly staff, clean, cute and designed room. (of course a bit small, but this in NY) overall very satisfied !
“Great value hotel”
A great hotel in a nice neighbourhood area, so you get to feel a little more of the real New York than if you stayed uptown. The place is a no frills (ie no gym, reataurant, bar or room service) but clean, comfortable and safe hotel, with very friendly staff and a price that is substantially lower than many of the gyms of a similar quality in the Manhattan area. There are plenty of bars, clubs, reaturants and gyms in the local area, so the hotels lack of facilities is not a problem at all - and who wants to stay in their hotel room when staying in NYC anyway!? The area is also great for LGBT travellers as the area is in one of New York's night-life hotspots. I will definitely recommend this hotel to those who want to spend their hard earned cash out and about, and not intending on spending time in their room.
“Great Central Location”
If you are staying in Manhatten, The Gem-Chelsea is convienient to Penn Station and basically a good central location. The hotel has been recently redone and it is super clean and modern. I would definitely stay there again.
“For the Road Warrior : A good find... Nice hotel in a great location...”
This is a really nice find for me. I was looking for a good deal at a good location in Chelsea and tried out the GEM Chelsea. Looks and feels like a new hotel, everything is new and the décor is pretty cool. This hotel worked out perfect for me, comfortable, walking distance to my client and very close to all the art galleries and meat packing district etc. My stay was surprisingly pleasant. The staff was really helpful and I liked the personal attention. They helped me with directions to my client and the evening neighborhood hangouts. Plus, there was turn down service and bath robes etc (that I didnt expect)! A little bit of pampering is always nice. The rooms are New York size but were very comfortable and served my purpose, and the hotel definitely has personality unlike other chains. Considering the location/ amenities/ personal attention this is definitely good value for money. A welcome substitute to the crazy time square hotels, all the culture and uniqueness of New York without the throngs of people.
“It's a Jewel”
Very clean, recently renovated and professionally designed to get the most out of the space. The room was comfortable and pleasing with all the right touches, such as nice linens (several pillows!), excellent lighting, updated fixtures and even the shower curtain was unique and well thought out. I believe the TV was a plasma or LCD. Instead of chocolates, they left a small linen spray that was wonderful! Also complimentary bottled water was a nice touch. The room had a unit to heat water, I enjoyed a complimentary herb tea before bed. In the mornings, a complimentary newspaper awaited me outside my door. The only drawback was limited space for luggage (the room was small). But hopefully you'll be spending more time enjoying the city than sitting in the room! The subway is a block away, very conveniently located (C & E). Patsy's Pizza is around the corner, good food, well priced (try the Chicken Paillard).
“Pretty Nice”
Hotel was clean and comfy. But the room was very small. It was only me, so it was fine. But if it were 2 of us in the room with luggage, etc, then it would've been a tight squeeze. The room was well decorated and 'modernized'. I did notice that the rooms were very thin, a couple times in the morning I could have sworn that someone was in my bathroom, but it was just housekeeping in the room next door! Overall I was pleased and would stay here again.
