Firstly, the hotel is superb. It has just been renovated to a high standard and is positively luxurious when compared with other 3 star properties in the area. The hotel is good value for money, the rooms are fairly spacious (not huge but bigger than most) and the décor is original and in my opinion very attractive. Perhaps the one problem with the hotel is the location - it's ten minutes outside the old city walls of Vannes (on foot) in a, shall we say, less than prosperous neighbourhood. Although I'm sure the area isn't particularly dangerous, it gives off a weird, slightly unsettling vibe to guests, especially older people, as the most direct route to the hotel from the city includes passing some rather rough bars, an adult cinema, and a bunch of low-rent shops with strange unsavoury characters milling around outside. Again, it's not a 'scary' area, just ramshackle and depressing.
The advantage of being outside the old city, however, is better value, space and quality for the money. The hotel is air conditioned (and the air conditioning actually works!), the free wi-fi works brilliantly and inside the room is a minibar that can also be used as a mini-fridge as billing is not automated on removal of items. The hotel has nice immediate surroundings, with gardens at the front and rear; but to be quite honest there really isn't much to look at whilst sat in them. The staff are friendly and the lobby is well-designed. One note I would add is that the hotel claims the rooms are 'soundproofed', I find this to be untrue - the sound from outside is muffled, but not entirely eliminated.
Vannes is beautiful and the hotel is good value for money. But one must recognise prior to booking that it is ten minutes walk outside the city with nothing at all of note in-between. Otherwise, it was an enjoyable place to stay and I would recommend it to family and friends.
