I really really enjoyed my stay. Hotel was clean and quiet and served my needs perfectly. Hotel staff was able to arrange for a rental car for me when I arrived to the hotel. Free parking was very limited but, I was always able to find paid street parking not far from the hotel. So not really a big deal. The hotel staff are superb. A special acknowledgement to Barbara Gomez who is so kind, professional, always had a smile on her face and offered great suggestions for things to do in Madeira during my stay. My only “complaint” which is minor is the temperature of the hot water in my room . I like the option of very hot water when it comes to bathing/showering. The water in my room was barely lukewarm. Outside of this minor issue, I would most certainly would stay at this hotel again.

The staff were lovely and super helpful. Me and my partner used the pool, spa and fitness facilities every day and really enjoyed the sunrise yoga classes. The buffet breakfast was decent. Hiring a car is necessary as there is very little within walking distance of the hotel. But the island is only small, so you can reach most places with a short drive from the hotel.

It's a 4 star hotel indeed
Positives: - staff is friendly - location is nice and quiet - activities like yoga, diving, hiking trips - landscaped area around the hotel - it's actually two hotels so more facilities - sommelier is amazing. Great wine tasting. - nice to see solar panels and water saving Improvements: - a proper coffee at breakfast - breakfast smoothies always run out - a sewage smell in all the lifts and toilets - no free water offered in the room - beach towels refreshed only for a fee - blue bar only has basic snack food - masseuse at spa doesn't seem to know what they're doing. Also, a 60min massage lasted for 40min. - asked to pay upfront upon check-in - check-in staff should make it clear whether your room is ready for early check in or not. We were led to believe we can check-in 2 hours early but our room wasn't actually ready which we only found out after 20min of paperwork. Not upset about the wait, only about the bad communication and expectation management - last thing you need when you haven't slept all night.

Everything about our stay was perfect. The location is absolutely stunning. We were within walking distance to local restaurant and supermarket, and only a 20 minute drive from Funchal and Sao Laurenco, and 30 minutes to Pico do Ariero. The staff were friendly and inviting. They explained everything well. Answered all of our questions. The breakfast buffet was great. Property was clean at all times. We would definitely return for another stay. Only negative was parking, but it wasn't terrible.

Slightly above average
It is a good hotel in a nice location with above-average room sizes. The views of the coast are good, but do not fool yourself that there is a beach—there is not. The best pools (those with views) were closed the entire time we were there. Breakfast is passable and the service is good but unremarkable. There are several restaurants around that provide good variety, and hikes to the Cristo Rei statue are possible from the hotel.

Enjoyed the option to use the ocean level pool at the sister hotel. Our room with ocean view was not straight on but a side view. Still beautiful to hear the ocean. Breakfast was very good with many options! Parking is a nightmare! Insufficient space available to hotel guest.

This is my third visit so that says it all. Reception a tad chaotic when checking in, they need to finish serving one guest before going onto the next, slightly irritating especially when having just got off a plane. Also if from the U.K. do not expect to be specially catered for, 90% of guests are German.

The room service
It's a nice hotel with stunning views but the room I stayed seemed old. We didn't have toiletries providing nor dressing gown and slippers. It said 4 stars but the service of hous keeping for guess was poor. It seemed because we booked through the package holiday and been put to that room. I once saw a guess wearing a hotel gown to go swimming pool but we didn't have. I stayed in for stars hotel before so I can compare the difference. Definitely the service of room is not 4 stars seem like 2 stars hotel.

Lovely hotel, nice sea views and nicely decorated room. Food was good for breakfast & I'm a fussy eater. Nice helpful staff. Local bus goes to Funchal daily and few minutes walk to bus stop. Weather was nice and comfortable for January. Would go again to this hotel.

Hi. This is actually my first review as I don't ever take the time to write things good or bad but I was really astonished by the customer service at this hotel. At the end of the day this was a 4* hotel with 5*s being few and far between in Canico, so I thought we couldn't go wrong. To keep things brief, everyday there was an ant infestation in our room, on the floors, coming out of a gap in the tiles in the shower and occasionally crawling all over our beds. each time we reported this to reception, they would "send" someone to have a look. But when we cam back to our room still we had this problem. Our sheets were never changed and we were there for 5 days. There was a small vent under our patio door which meant lizards came in and out. Everything took long with this hotel - i.e. I ordered a hair drier for my hair, this came over an hour later when I was fully dressed to go out so I left my hair wet. Also you have to walk through a nest of flies every time we left our room. My partner is not one to complain and neither am I, but on leaving we asked to speak to a manager. We spoke to the Manager on duty (this was on Sunday) who told us the hotel manager will speak to us before we leave on Mon morning. The hotel manager just apologized and said we are aware we have this problem with the rooms in this area. Didn't offer anything, not even to pick up the two bottles of water we had on our tab! Awful customer service and awful room.

The hotel has everything that you need and is within walking distance of local restaurants as well as Canico city centre. Staff at the hotel were friendly and welcoming, especially the staff at the morning breakfast buffet who made every effort to try and accommodate our dietary needs. Madeira is a beautiful island with beautiful people, we would love to return again and stay at the Galo Resort.

Great Hotel near Funchal
We stayed at the Galo for two nights before heading north on the island of Madeira. We had a very nice room with a balcony and partial sea view. The grounds were very nice. The breakfast buffet was good and the pool area was very inviting area to sit for meals. This hotel is close to Funchal without actually being in the city, so the area was a bit less crowded. Very nice area.

Beautiful area just above the sea. Great walking places along the ocean. Great choices for breakfast. Great restaurants next to and near the hotel. Local bus right at your doorstep. The rooms are great. Wifi is blazing fast. Great staff. Well maintained facilities. Good showers. Very comfortable rooms. I would definitely stay here again.

Great hotel with amazing in-house facilities of spa, gym and indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Only downside was a little disappointed that wifi throughout the hotel is not free
