“Like staying with Family (who have really great taste)”
From the second I walked in the door and was offered a warm cup of green tea to returning hours after I checked out to get items I asked the staff to watch for me, I couldn't get over the warm, welcoming feel of the Varden. When was the last time you remembered the names of people at a hotel? I promise you will remember Charles, Larry and Angela. Everyone was waiting to offer advice on nearby restaurants or poised to pour a glass of wine or hot beverage after a long day. I can't say enough about the wonderful service at the Varden. I look forward to going back.
“Service with a Smile”
All the previous reviews from other guests are completely accurate. 5 star service as soon as you arrive and the owners are dedicated to making your stay a comfortable one. Rooms are on the small side but sufficient. Room conditions are immaculate and new. Most importantly the bed is comfortable (important after a long flight). Location may not suit the single traveller as you are a short distance from downtown LA but ideal for the couple not looking for the hustle & bustle. We only stayed 2 nights but there's plenty of restaurants to check out. (comparable to Melbourne's) Quick tip: Sunseekers tour which picks up from the hotel is a worthwhile tour getting you around the LA tourist sights in a 1 day tour. (We were going to do the drive ourselves but glad we didn't as we saw alot more and getting around LA isn't the easiest or most intuitive for Melbournians) The mexican next door also provides a quick cheap and decent eat. In Short: 5 Star service (with a smile). HIgh quality Room (slightly small) Good Location for couples. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
“I'd stay here again.”
We found this hotel to be perfect for our needs. It is located in the a convenient location and the staff is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would go back again. We talked with the owner over breakfast and he was a very personable man.
“The Varden Is rather awesome!”
My wife and I loved staying at the Varden. Good location (not far from Long Beach attractions), quiet, and the staff is really excellent! The room was a bit small (more along the lines of a very clean, European hotel), but everything worked and very clean. The prices are quite reasonable and I would stay here again. Also, the continental breakfast is fresh and the coffee excellent. Well played, Varden.
“"A charming place to stay while visiting Long Beach"”
This tiny hotel was built in 1929 and was renovated three years ago. It is located a half mile of easing walking to the Convention Center and the harbor and reminded me of a high class hostel or bed and breakfast. The continental breakfast and wine tasting offerings were quite good and the staff was very pleasant to everyone. I will go back and recommend this hotel as an good alternative to a large hotel any day. There is a place to park your vehicle and the hotel is easily accessible by public transportation.
“Excellent, friendly staff”
My friend and I stayed at the Varden because we love to stay at boutique hotels, and this one is a gem. We checked in really late because our other day plans (whale-watching) took longer than expected, and the extremely friendly staff helped us to our room and brought us each a glass of wine (they have wine and cheese tastings every night). They also gave us some great suggestions of area restaurants for our dinner. I usually always expect to come back home with a sore back, but the bed at the Varden was really amazing with great sheets - no tossing and turning at all. We stayed 3 nights, and we are going to stay here again when we return to California.
“Definitely go back!”
The hotel was very clean and people who were working there were really friendly and kind. I felt amazingly comfortable while I was staying there. The location was also perfect. Not only for my business reason, but also I found several good stores to eat and shop. I will definitely go back to stay in this hotel for the next visit!
“Very pleasant stay”
Much thanks to Charles and Larry for making my stay very warming and pleasant. I will definitely visit again!
“Lovely Boutique Hotel in Long Beach”
Newly renovated, lovely clean rooms. Bed was a little on the small size.
“Cleanest and friendliest hotel”
The Varden was immaculate - the foyer, the rooms, everything. Breakfast in the foyer each morning, snacks in the afternoon... All staff where extremely helpful and charming. Location was perfect with the train stop across the road, short walk to restaurants, shops and beach. Cannot wait to come back!
