“Hotel parfait”
“Quiet in the middle of London”
We were given a room in the basement at the back of the hotel and it was like sleeping in the country. Our room also had a door to a small "garden" behind the hotel. This was a private access that wasn't available to any other guests in the basement. The hotel staff were super friendly and eager to help. The room is considered a "suite" - it had a small kitchenette in a closet. The room was also huge by European standards. We felt like we were living in our own flat.
“Great value”
Hotel is in an excellent location for central London. Rooms are nice and spacious. Provision of facilities for small scale self-catering is a great idea.Only downside was the need to go two doors down the street to another group hotel for breakfast.
“Great location”
The hotel is two blocks from the Russel Square Underground Station, one block from the Brittish Museum and squeezed between two squares (parks). We never ate at the hotel restraunts because there many great restraunts and cafes within walking distance. The room was beautiful and had its own kichenette, so we could make dinner in our own room. There was also a beutiful private garden.
“Quality Hotel for Great Price”
We were in London for four days and the Portland was an excellent choice for us. Our room was extra-large with a king size bed. The bathroom was generously sized with a fantastic shower! The room had a small kitchenette that fit into the closet with microwave, coffee maker, fridge and sink. There was also a table and chairs should you choose to eat in the room. It had the extras like a hairdryer and iron as well. The tube stop is about .25 miles away as well as a convenient store and outside mall with a grocery store. The neighborhood felt welcoming and the staff was amiable. I would recommend this hotel in a heartbeat.
“I would definitely return”
This small hotel was an excellent choise for us. It is very close to the Russell Square Tube station which is on the direct Tube route from Heathrow. We were able to walk all over London from this location. The only cab we took was to Victoria Station when we left London. The accomodations were as described. We were very pleasantly surprised. The staff were very friendly and helpful, The accomodations were clean, comfortable, and modern. The washroom and shower etc. were excellent. We were on the street side and there is some traffic noise, but it died down at night, and the window drapes were very heavy providing good soundproofing, and darkness if you want to sleep in.
“Overall great place to stay”
The Portland was terrific and I would definitely stay there again. Service was friendly and attentive. They had upgraded us (for no reason) and our room was really nice and big, and VERY clean. There were a few things that were sort of a drag -- the bed was really hard and we were put in a first-floor room on the street -- which was very noisy. Service was terrific. Great area, and very close to the tube.
“Fine London base”
Our roon was enormous, staff friendly, efficient and helpful. Only down-points were that we had to cross the road to a sister-hotel for breakfast which was basic, to say the least, and that we had booked a twin-room but were given a double. On enquiring about this we were told that our room WAS a twin and that the sofa was a sofa-bed, however on neither of the nights we stayed did anyone bother to convert the sofa to a bed and so we both slept in the double bed, which fortunately was about a mile wide and very comfortable! Would stay again because it is reasonably priced, very clean and central, though on the hottest weekend of the year air-conditioning would have been a welcome bonus!
“Very cosy”
A typical english hotel, warm and cosy. It has characterand style.
“Very pleased with this one”
Hadn't heard of The Portland before, but was in a crunch and the price was right. And I was very pleasantly surprised. The room was very clean and I think it might have been recently rennovated. There is a mini-kitchen which I did not use, but was a nice feature. The bathroom was very small, but nice. Good shower pressure and temp, and Gilchrist & Soames bath products. No trouser press, but there is an iron and board in the room. One drawback is the lack of A/C, so in the summer it could get uncomfortable in the room. I asked for a fan, and the front desk said they would send one, but they never did. But otherwise the staff was nice and efficient. So, it was definitely worth the money, and a nice little find in London! Well done!
